A couple of years ago I had been running and squatting a lot and my workout was very intense and a little premature for what my knee could handle.

Slowly the knee joint felt that it was getting tighter till it suddenly just completely broke out in pain, so I went to see a doctor and was diagnosed with runner's knee. A couple of months later and I got a lot better, but after that I haven't healed. My knee muscles/tendons feel tight and they hurt, mostly I can feel a dull pain but when I try to exercise it hurts even though I can still use them and perform the exercises. They also hurt when I sit in specific positions over longer time or when stand over longer time. It's been 2 years and I'm still hurting. It's a very irritated pain as if the nerves are irritated.

I went to the doctor again yesterday and I told him that I wanted a MRI scan of my knees to see what's causing the pain and he said that he knew what it was (runner's knee) and that there was no reason to check it out.

Now I'm a bit concerned, I'm not a doctor and neither are you, but I am sure that you can come up with some advices from experience. Is there anything the doctor can do to alleviate the pain, set me on a program or do anything at all? Because it feels unnecessary to just feel pain without doing anything about it...

hey bro,
sorry to hear about your condition, sounds like your doc has his head buried up his butt,, if its been 2 years i have to ask, have you or did you see a physical therapist? if not i would highly recommend you doing so, since the first step in getting your knee back to health is by the proper exercises that a physical therapist can help you out with, that and rest , but if its been 2 years i would suggest finding a new doctor that will properly treat your problem, would hate to give you any exercise advice with out you first having your knee checked out with a professional, like i said, find a new doctor and see if he cant recheck the knee or recommend you to a specialist,
good link if you have not already read it about runners knee

My knees suck. I've always complained about them since I was a kid. I was told it was growing pains back then and just came up with my own diagnosis of They Suck! I have to use knee wraps when I do any type of heavy weight. They also give me problems when I get up and down or kneel on them for any length of time. I walk like an idiot for a while afterwards. Hopefully I won't need a knee replacement in the future. So I feel your pain!

I was at this therapist once who checked my legs and found out that my calf muscles where very tight making it difficult for me to lock my knee joints. And he said that it was probably the reason that I got the runner's knee in the first place because the knees rest when in locked out position. He said that it was a sign of a tight lower back, he did some breaking on my back and it walking was suddently a lot more pleasant, at least for a couple of days. Sadly the guy retired that week.

I then later looked up for physiotherapist, but he didn't seem to have the same understanding for my problem even though I tried to explain him and his methods didn't help at all.

The next time I see my doctor I am going to ask him to send me to a specialist. How do I exactly check my knee?

Thanks for the responses oh and thanks for teh link, I only got adds and nightmares when seeking for Runner's knee through google.

your welcome for the link, glad it shed some light on your problem, i would say the only way to properly check for any damage is to have a scan done, i believe they would do either a MRI or a x-ray type , just tell the doc its really bad and you need it checked out pronto , usually if you say its livable they want to prescribe some kind of over the counter pain meds or tell ya to just give it rest, the specialist will know what to look for, regular doc`s seem to know allot about general health but not all that much about more in-depth problems, and after 2 years i would say yours is more in-depth than not.

i agree mike my GP doc is a dumbass and sometimes i think i know more than he does about the body(obviously not) but he just seems so stupid and i guess it because he just general and dosen't know in depth stuff so def go to a specialist chrism

See a knee specialist. I had knee problems growing up (Osgood's Slaughters) and the only one who figured it out was a knee specialist as none of the other docs that saw it had a clue.

Go see one and ask for any tests you want. Any doc that won't run a test is a moron. The smart ones know to run any test they can think of to not only make you happy, but avoid malpractice and also to make some more money. If you're with some managed care plan, DEMAND the MRI.
