Hi! I'm 5'5'' short and currently deadlifting 90 pounds on each side for about 5 reps... Anyway, some gym buddies were insisting me to use a belt. Is there a point where you have to strat using a belt? Also, what are the consequences of NOT using a belt? Thanks

there is a debate to whether actually work or not. Personally the only time i ever wear belts is when i go really heavy on squats and deadlifts i.e. 3 reps or less. i feel it just gives that little extra support
i dont really see a point in using it for exercises like bench press or skullcrushers. however some people like to use them so its just personal choice

See I'm right behind you bro,,,LOL,,,

Instead of using the belt strenghten your core.. i.e midsection.. As yes man said use the belt on very heavy reps.. other times get into the practice of tightening your abs or contracting your abs during the movement..

Chris

yesman and chris, I feel like every time I hit up a thread you two already voiced the good word...great advice guys!

Just to add a little more - when you perform your deads without a belt, make sure you utilize the "valsalva maneuver". Simply put, take a DEEP breath before lifting (concentrate on flexing the abs and keeping the back straight), this will reinforce your midsection and ultimately, allow you to lift more weight as well! Typically, like the other guys mentioned, performing higher reps without the belt will strengthen your lower back and abs (actually a really good workout for your core)
When you use a belt for 1-3 rep maxes, make sure you use it correctly. Inhale deeply and push your abs OUT - against the belt! Don't exhale during the lift (or exhale just slightly). This stabalizes the spine. Goodluck!
