My girlfriend has been complaining lately about excruciating pain from shin splits...does anyone know of a remedy for this or some sort of brace she could buy? I suggested reverse calf raises but she hasn't tried em yet...

shin splints differ in their actual cause, two are overuse and one is stress fractures. Localised pain = stress fracture, general pain = overuse injury.

Icing does help a bit short term. Long term needs more info. Sudden increases in training/running, now on hard surfaces, physical imbalances, strength imbalances (like you pointed out), etc.

There are no braces, but orthodics can be made (don't bother with the store bought ones, they are crap) if there is some physical imbalance. This would be tested out by a pediatrist.

I can't find anything, I have really bay problems with shin splints. I can't even use a treadmill. I'd suggest instead of running (assuming thats how she got shin splints) do a bike or an elipitical. Once I did that my pain went away.

Reverse calf raises suck.

I maybe know a cool excersize, but just learned it today, very smart thinking on how to do it. Once I'v be tried it out I'll let you know.

try walking around on your heels with toes in the air as well as spreadin a towel out on your floor and scrunching it in with your toes...both of these were reccomended to me by my PT and they helped immensely.

I got shin splints when I began sprinting. I had them for a week. I asked my mom about them since she is a nurse. She told me to sit down on feet with knees pointed out and lean back putting your back on the floor. After I did that a few times my splints were completely gone. I cant say this happens everytime but give it a shot..
