Over the past four weeks I have been lifting a lot heavier than usual (6,4,2 reps) during all of my exercises. My elbow has been bothering me for about 2 weeks where it is sore to the touch mostly on the outside just below the tricep. I woke up yesterday to notice a fluid build up around the area. My question is, what causes the fluid build up? Where does it come from? I am almost sure it is due to heavy lifting, but I won't rule anything out until I know the above questions. I have been icing it this evening, but beyond that what can I do? I do have a doctors appt. for Friday but don't want to go if I don't have to, just my preference.

Did it swell very quickly all of a sudden? I mean in a matter of minutes, not overnight. If so, was it warm to the touch when it did?

Go to a physio/sports doc, not a general practitioner/family doc if you can.

The fluid is due to damage to the tendon attachment to the bone, or the cartilage which coats the bones within the joint.

It should be definately be investigated.

In the meantime do not risk more injury, lower your weight or take some time off.
