Im trying to lose weight and build muscle and ive been told to take creatine and whey protein by a few of the members on here, but when I went to go buy it they told me its a weight gain supplement and its not what im looking for

It's not a weight gain supplement, it might cause you to carry a bit more water weight than usual but thats it. Just out of curriosity did you to GNC to buy it?

Dont listen to anything they have to tell you, most of it is a rehearsed product speach that they give to everybody when they dont even understand it themselves. Your best bet when buying a supplement is to do some research on it yourself so they cant take you for a fool and then take your money.

don't listen to those NOOBS in GNC, either that or order from our forums online shop nutra planet...

get some;
whey (optimum nutrition, highly recommended)
creatine monohydrate (prolabs, personal recommendation)
flax seed (any from a health store)
multivitamins (any from a health store, just stay away from dirt CHEAP ones & animal pak)
arginine (any)
casein protein (reflex micellar casein, personal recommendation) before bed

remember what GNC stands for
