Dextrose is much better than honey PWO. Reason is, honey contains table sugar which is not nearly as fast in the digesting department. Before bed it's important to get casien (the slowest digesting protein), whether it be from low fat cottage cheese or from a casien shake (either is fine).
For your question on whether foods are better than supplements, CWUTrainer made a great post on this in the VIP section.

Yet, the 50/50 mix up is great...maybe try to get it to like 60/40 with 60 being whole foods and the 40 being shakes and bars. One quick thing...always take a shake post workout! Not a meal...Don't eat that meal for about an hour after you work out. Your body needs it blood supply to replenish glycogen stores...not digest your food, hence the shake. Fast protein absorbtion...low digestion requirements.. I hope this helped. Merry Christmas
One More thing...In terms of growth....Whey is going to be more benficial...As its biologicla value (or the actual amount of protien digested that is used for muscle repair and growth is higher, not much higher but nonetheless higher) However, don't stop eating whole foods...your body needs both sources to grow...Grow...GROW!
