my friend showed me his health textbook today, and it says there that you should typically consume no more than .8 grams of protein per kilo.(cant remember the pounds measurement.) can that be right? it said that too much protein strains the kidneys. does this only apply to mainly sedentary people, or real active guys like us?

Ok i read the whole article, however , it's more parent oriented than anything.
It does not shed any light on how much protein one should consume daily based on one's bodyweight.

1-2 grams per pound of bodyweight is how much you should consume. Ill look up sources if you want, but this is pretty standard. The problem with health textbooks is that they first advocate health guidelines put forth by the USDA (the US dept of AGRICULTURE!!!!!) of course they feel the basis of a diet should be grains. Second, a 75 year old wheelchair bound woman whose only exercies is opening her pill bottle and peeing on herself is going to have VERY different nutrition needs from someone like Ronnie Coleman. The USDA guidelines do not account for any differences. It is all average. If you look at medicines, they have ranges (1-2, 2-4) This is to account for bodyweight.

Read this too for more protein safety info. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/layne38.htm

After reading it, tell your friend to shut his pie hole.
