Hey all,

Just a question. I was taking a teaspoon of ON Powder BCAAs in my preworkout drink and after about a week I noticed when doing cardio or sweating heavily, my sweat was a pungent ammonia smell. I read about this and decided it was definitely from the BCAAs.

Does this mean Im taking too much or is it normal? Or does it mean I simply dont need to supplement BCAAs?

I quit adding it to my drink and the strong ammonia smell went away.....

Is it possible that BCAA's help to detox the body? I tried looking into it, but found no support. Maybe someone here knows? If BCAA did help detox, then that would explain it.

No for both of you. You get BCAA's in your protein powder, so it had to be something else in your supplement. BCAA's don't 'detox' the body, if you had toxins built up in your body you would be very sick. I'm not sure what you were taking, but it wasn't amino acids that made you smell bad. lol

Ok, well I did find this article that suggests maybe I need more carbs before working out/cardio: Bodybuilding.com - Jeremy Likness - What Is That Ammonia Smell When I Sweat?

I did think it was odd after stopping the bcaa's that the smell went away pretty fast. I have not noticed an ammonia smell since then (Several weeks ago)

My pre workout drink was ON CGT-10 (Creatine Glutamine Taurine) with the BCAAs added in......

you should try mixing the BCAA's with water and drink them during your workout i do 5g with 1/4gal water, it helps fight catabolism during intense exercise that way IMO

Yeah I have never heard of this issue. Could be that you not drinking enough water like said above

This may be a long shot, but you could ask your doctor about pH balance of your sweat or something. Maybe you have a condition where your body fluids are affected somehow. I'm just coming up with this off the top of my head but you could check.

yes mix with water and crystal light or the taste will just gage you on plain BCAA`a especially the ON brand ,, horrid taste in just water, so for sure use crystal light to mask the taste..

i use ON in plain water, i dont mind the taste...reminds me that im taking more than just water, i guess you could say it keeps me in an intense mindstate lol
