Hey guys just want to pass on some information I found out about Grapefruit.
When taking supplements if you eat grapefruits they will cancel many CYP enzymes because of large amounts of Naringrin. The can negate some positive effects of some supplements and cause some to not be able to leave the system so exponantially increasing its effect which could lead to an overdose.
This can also work to your benefit if you take something fake or bad. Eat lots of grapefruit to help cleanse your liver and system.

Edit: To read more about this read my post below.

source please...

Grapefruits are known to contain large amounts of Naringrin. The majoirty of caffeine and other alkaloids (nicotine, ephedra etc) are metabolized by various enzymes such as CYP1A2, CYP2E1, and CYP3A4. Naringrin hpwever has been documented to inhibit CYP3A4 and CYP1A2 activity in the human liver.

A lot of jargin here that people may not understand, but basically this means that naringin may increase the half life of various alkaloids, especially caffeine. Some fat burners untilize naringrin in their incredients to enhance the effects of caffeine.

So this information may contradict your original statement, so you might want to be more specific with what supplements you are referring to. It might "cancel out the effects" of some supplements, but it seems as if it enhances the effects of other supplements such as caffeine and ephedra.

In the metabolism system of the liver there are two very important phases. Phase 1: P450 CYP which has four different types of families, are different types of enzymes that help fat soluble based medicines or supplements become water soluble in the Phase 2 detoxiphying process. So basically when I said it "negates the usefullness of the supplements" what I meant is that it negates the CYP "hook" that will bind it to transferases such as the Glucuronic Acid "GA". This needs to happen to allow for the phenominom of glucuronidation that will allow the supplement or medicine to go through the kidney; therefore, the fat soluble medicine can get digested and peed out.

Basically, what Im trying to say is that some may negate the usufullnes of the drug but the mass majority of the supplements or medicines will not be able to be processed which leads to overdosing! Many people overdose because it doesnt bind and continues to go around in your system without being detoxicated and peed out. For example if you take 20mg of something it can really lead to 100mg because of it increasing the blood concentration of said product. SO, if you plan on eating Grapefruits while taking something it would be best to research on how it may react.

I highly doubt that eating a grapefruit every day will cause large enough inhibition of the CYP enzymes to lead to an overdose of any sort of drug. I don't know enough about that family of enzymes, and I'm sure this mechanism is correct, but I have to say I feel like eating a grapefruit is not going to cause me to have a stroke from too much caffeine.

Heres the wiki on cytochrome P450 and all the rest, but unless you're a biochemist I doubt its useful.

what the hell. ok everyone post up full sources and dont beat around the bush hinting at was supplement your talking about, not caffeine, screw up birthcontrol? I think that if there was a issue that the companies that make this would legally have to put some warning on the label or it would be a little more when known. Also weird that that would come up in vet school, how much grapefruit do animals eat? and that would have the same type of systems that would work similar to humans so this would be releavent? Sounds interesting anyway. Now I just feel I have to go search over the net to figure out if this true cause just I just bought a 5 lb bag of texas ruby reds and they are soo good lol

Funny stuff. The truth is the vets go through on average more training than a human doctor. The reason is they have to first learn about the human physiology then nearly every animal. The truth is animals, even though there are some minor differences, work in much the same ways we do, we are in fact animals. That said, dont worry about a few grapefruits, just be careful and check to make sure there are no complications with whatever you may be taking. If it were me, I would make sure if you are cycling anything to play it safe and wait for the cycle to be over before enjoying your ruby reds.
