What's up with Casein?

I take ON Casein before bed almost every night, and i notice a lot of guys here do too. But i've wondered about this for some time ... since its a pretty popular form of protein powder, why is it that ON is the only major supplement manufacturer that makes it? I know Syntha-6 and Muscle Milk also contains casein (as do other Pro Complex and others) but those two are more of protein blends.

If its popular, useful and profitable, why don't the other supp companies sell it too?

Because the big dollars are in the plain old cheaper and plainer forms of protein powder. The majority of ppl in bodybuilding i would say are undereducated on nutrition and so they wouldnt buy casein unless they learned about it. so id say that the best business decision is to focus on plain ol wpc and wpi

that's true. But i think if another company like launches a decent casein line that is priced cheaper than ON's, it would probably sell well... imho.

dymatize makes a protein mix called elite 12 hour which is mainly casein protein but it also has a little whey, egg, and soy protein thrown in it as well. anyway, obviously, as the name states, it is designed to be a slow digesting protein mix that lasts up to 12 hours which is what plain casein protein is designed to do also. word to the wise for anyone getting it though is to steer clear of the rich chocolate flavor. it is cot damn disgusting.

Me too. Slightly better than their "chocolate" flavor. That stuff is horrible, underlined bolded, bad stuff. It's the second worst-tasting supp I've ever eaten.

Fat-free cottage cheese stole my heart, that's what I'm running with these days.

man you're telling me. i literally have to pinch my nose to force that stuff down. even if i mix chocolate syrup in with it it's still almost unbearable. i wonder what their blueberry muffin tastes like hahahaha. i'm definitely gonna spring for the ON next time.

i second that. if that's really the second worst supplement you've ever had, you should really let everyone know what the first is so no one buys it. as for the cottage cheese, i am not a big. fan i try to go the yogurt route and then choke down a little dymatize 12 hour along with it.

do all casein protein powders taste much worse than whey powder cause i have dymatize's elite whey protein and it tastes alright.

Thats what cardio is for 10g is'nt too much. This is what my nutrionist reccomends to all of his clients. Plus I dont use 2 scoops. i use two scoops of my whey and 1 scoop of casein so its only 5 G of fat when I do it like that. But yea it is expensive, and it goes fast. I usually go through a tub a week. How much did your source say? I pay $28 for for the container you are speaking of.

also, correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't it have a pretty low protein to total weight ratio? 70.14 grams total weight per serving with only 32 grams of it being protein? that's less than 50%. i usually don't but a protein powder (or even see a protein powder) that is too much less than 75% protein unless it is some type of weight gainer mix.

Casien is different from whey protein. A little bit of whey can give you a lot of protein, but its the other way around for Casien.

I am going to order this powder for next week: Bodybuilding.com - Universal Milk & Egg Protein - No Fat No Cholesterol! On sale now!

Looks pretty good!

The only problem with cottage cheese is that it has a LOT of sodium in it.

I calculated it and its cheaper for me per gram of protein to just buy a tub of ON casein at my local health food store, than to buy the equivalent in cottage cheese.

Yeah definitely, thats my big reason, and the sodium too.

Oh yeah and save money over the casein powder. I like mine with natural apple sauce.

Although UC brings up a good point. I wonder if you need that much protein during the night though.

Id imagine this would be when the body has the best chance to repair itself. So I think a slow trickle of protein would keep a good chance of not going catabolic during this 6-10 hour period with no nutrition. I have also read that a protein rich environment during sleep helps ones body to release GH naturally.

yea for sure bro,, the reason i like the cottage cheese is it kills the hunger better than the casein powder,,, i generally use 1 1/2 cup of cottage cheese which is close to 40gs of protein,,
