Right well let me start by explaining a bit about myself:-

Im 19 at uni studying sports science, so I do have some knowledge about body building scene. I have been going to the gym for about 8 months now. I currently weigh 67kg and am 185cm tall. I have been taking weight gainer (SciMx Mass System) for a while now.

I have been told that I have an over active thyroid gland. Which means I have a fast metabolism. I have always struggled to put on weight does anyone have any ideas or about any supps that may slow down my metabolism or anything that might help put weight on.

Thanks For Your Help

Thyroid hormones increase the rate of many metabolic reactions including: fat synthesis and breakdown, and glycogen breakdown to glucose. Thyroid hormones also increase the rate of cellular respiration which simply means there will be heat stimulation from the body (ie increased metabolism, as you already know).

Hyperthyroidism patients will typically have weight loss despite a vastly increased food intake, and this will make putting on mass a definite uphill battle. If it is a severe condition (being at 67kg I don't imagine it is that severe) treatment usually involves: surgery, using radioactive isotope 131-Iodine because iodine concentrates in the thyroid gland, and drugs that block thyroid hormone synthesis.

None of those treatments are anything that Orbitnutrition can hook you up with, however I feel they will not be necessary in your case. I would definitely adjust your diet before you go after any supplements, and if you weigh 67kg consume around 3,000 calories.

One question, do you have enlargement of one or more areas of your thyroid so you know for sure it is an over active thyroid gland?

i get you...so ur a hard gainer! there is no supplement that can slow it down. all you need to do is eat a lot of clean food! adjust your diet to where you eat at least 3500+ calories. and then throw in your weight gainer! but if you want a weight gainer i suggest you make a homemade one...saves lots of cash!

Well thanks for the info guys, I did have something similar in my head that I was going to do.

As for your question Chimera yes I do have an enlargement of one area I think, it was not me who actually diagnosed it though so I am not sure. It was my nutritionist from university. He started feeling around my adams apple and then then asking bout calorie intake. So as far as I know I have an over active thyroid gland but it should do no harm for my health just means I will struggle to put the weight on.

Thanks for you help guys

The best thing you can do is keep track of exactly what you eat so you know how much to increase by if you aren't gaining weight. Good luck!

Hey unless your Nutritionist is a medically liscensed doctor he can't diagnose you with any type of disease. An enlargement of the thyroid doesn't necessarily mean you have hyperthyroid. If you really have a problem you'd need blood tests to make sure. I'd be a little concerned with a possible enlargement in the thyroid region.

That being said if you are a hardgaiber keeping track of diet and increasing calories with clean foods is the way to go. I always make my own "gainer" shakes with whey, milk, oats, PB and maybe fruit or cottage cheese. Also having bags of homemade trail mix in bags like in my car, backpack, desk helps to increase calories as well
