I want to start off by saying hi, I'm one of those people that always lurked around these boards soaking up all the knowledge but never actually joined or posted. First, thank you to all the members on this site that provide quality, informational responses and know what they are talking about in all aspects of bodybuilding and weight training. A lot of other sites just consist of a bunch of people that love to think they are all about this stuff but are full of ****. I know yinz guys don't play around.

Just a little about myself, I'm a thin 22 and an extremely hardgainer. I know everyone says they are a hardgainer but for me, I had to quit weight training for a couple months for an injury and I ate nothing but junk food and had little physical activity and I actually lost 10 pounds. I'm about to get on a medication for 6 months that I can't drink with so I'm getting into a very serious training/nutrition program to pack on a little weight. I took several weight training classes in college so, combined with all the knowledge I've got though this site, I feel like I'm not an expert but I do know a decent amount.

Anyway, my question is about casein protein and it's links with cancer. This has to have been discussed before but I couldn't find it anywhere. One of the problems I've had when weight training in the past is I don't think my diet was every quite on point. Plus, my metabolism is so fast that I know that I become catabolic real quick when I go to sleep at night. As a result, as a part of shaping my diet up, I got some casein protein/12-hour protein mix to hold me over through the night. After doing some research and whatnot on it, a bunch of medical/health sites say that some research points towards casein protein causing cancer with Dr. T. Colin Campbell being a main spokesperson for this through his research. Also, some other studies have hinted that it might promote or aggravate autism in children. I wanted to get the Dungeon's perspective on this.

Sorry this post was so long and thanks for everything guys. I hope to start to contribute what I can on this site.

cottage cheese is a milk product so it has casein protein also so it would have the same problems as taking a casein protein powdered supplement

Casein and Whey protein are the two proteins that constitute the protein make up of milk. Casein composes 80% of the protein in milk and Whey composes 20% of the protein in milk. So in any dairy product, there is bound to be both whey protein and casein protein. In some products there is more then other (ie cottage cheese which is almost all casein protein).

In a nutshell, what I am trying to say is that when there is evidence that casein protein causes cancer, that is relative. And if you do believe in it, then by all means eliminate all dairy products from your diet except for whey protein powders and a few select dairy products that are composed of primarily whey protein. My self on the other hand, I will continue to consume casein protein.

I find that very hard to believe. EVERYBODY takes in casein protein and you do not see everyone walking around with tumors sticking out of their faces.

I definitely don't believe everything I read, but I do like to make the most educated decision I can based on all of the information I can gather. That's why instead of taking what him and his study claim for face value, I decided to ask yinz guys for your take on the matter. Also, bodybuilders do take in more casein protein than your average person. And, just as I thought, the members here provided me with some very good information and perspectives. A-Ron, I didn't know about his ties to PETA; that is good to know and definitely sheds a different light on his motives. Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah dude I definitely understand. Bodybuilders and weight lifters take in more protein than normal people, definitely, and I'm sure that would include casein. This is the way I look at it: people have been eating animal foods for thousands of years. If it really was that bad we wouldn't have survived as a species and neither would ANY OTHER MAMMALS because we are basically the same. So I think its B.S.

Also, I looked on google for just about 5 seconds and a lot of what his book does is tell people that ALL animal foods are bad for you. Which, if you have half a brain, makes it very obvious that he is a PETA nutjob. haha

haha yeah, agreed. that's why i was so skeptical of the whole casein/cancer thing because obviously breast milk has it and i honestly can't think of a food that there is less of a doubt as to whether we should consume it, haha. in fact, your mother's breast milk is supposed to be the first main form of nutrients people get.

i love those people that say we are good without eating meat and how we don't need meat in our diet, etc. i start my argument with how our teeth have evolve and are currently designed and go from there haha. but that's another discussion.

thanks again for the info. i think i've decided to stick with the casein protein haha.
