some people claim it helps with sleep, i myself found it to help with nothing, waste of money in my view, but that is just MY view..
Quote:
ZMA is a combination of two minerals, zinc and magnesium, and Vitamin B-6 or pyridoxine. All three of these compounds are important in biological processes, and while studies have shown that most Americans get enough zinc and Vitamin B6,[2] more than 50% are deficient in magnesium.[3]

An increase in exercise can lead to the loss of vitamins and minerals making it particularly important for bodybuilding due to the blood sugar level rises and urination increases, increasing the loss of magnesium, zinc, B12, B6, folic acid, and many other nutrients. Although drinking water re-hydrates an athlete, fruit juice, sports drinks or foods high in water such as vegetables are needed to replenish water-soluble nutrients.

The proportion of ingredients generally used in products is 20-30 mg Zinc, 400-500 mg Magnesium and ~10mg B6. According to the label directions, ZMA should be taken before bed on an empty stomach (2 hours after eating your last meal and at least 30 minutes prior to any other supplements). The product should not be taken with calcium (cheese, milk, etc.), the reason being that calcium blocks the absorption of zinc.

Go with Melatonin. I have trouble sleeping myself where I can't fall asleep until I've been in bed for about an hour to an hour and a half. I bought some melatonin last week and have been taking 3 mg before bed everynight. I'm usually out in 20 minutes now. If you have alot of trouble sleeping, I think the safest dosage is 5 mg without the side effects of nausea or dizziness.

well its original claims was to increase natrual testosterone and GH levels through improved sleep. Improved sleep yes as some of the ZAM formulas contain Melatonin. Also with the deeper sleep GH levels will clearly rise more than if you sleep was some what disturbed.

An old Study I read. showed that ZMA did increase test slightly but more so due to the fact that the average male which was the test subject, does not consume enough Zinc or magnesium in there daily diet. Just like many hormones will be positively affected when a vitamin is in use or the daily nutrition is on point.

it was created by Victor Conte (Barry Bonds' alleged steroid provider) a few years before he began actual steroid sales. Zinc, Magnesium, and b-12 vitamins were the largest deficiencies he saw based on various tests of athletes who came to him for supplement advice.

this supplement was created for HIGH INTENSITY workouts. i took ZMA during football season my junior/senior years, and it did help me get my legs back and feel less of energy drain acompanied with high intensity training. however, i continued taking it after football seasons, and the benefits nearly disappeared. i was not losing nearly as much of these crucial vitamins as i had during football. you have to remember its tested on people who treat bodybuilding or their sports as their lives, often with 2+ hours of intense workouts per day, and for them it may do wonders.

if youre putting out a few hours of high intensity cardio type work, if you are on a HIT program, or if you are doing a sport i would definitely recommend it. however, for the typical 1-2 hour bodybuilder who recreationally lifts, i would say its a waste of money. stick to protein, creatine, nos, etc.

thats what many studies claim, here is a recent review done in dec. of 2008

ZMA is a patented mineral formula containing 30mg of zinc and 450mg of magnesium along with 11mg of vitamin B6. It was originally developed by Balco Labs (yes, that Balco Labs, the one Barry Bonds made famous). In their studies they noticed that athletes often showed mineral deficiencies in zinc and magnesium

Zinc and magnesium are two minerals that can be very important to muscle building. Zinc plays a major role in hormone regulation (testosterone) and magnesium helps oxygenate muscle tissue. Deficiencies in either can severely hamper your muscle building capabilities.

Multivitamins can contain identical amounts of these minerals but not cure the deficiency for athletes whereas the separate supplementation with ZMA products can. The reason for this is the theory of competing nutrients. Calcium is a known inhibitor of zinc and magnesium absorption (limiting their absorption by up to 70%). Therefore when calcium is present in the stomach, the body basically absorbs it and excretes the zinc and magnesium.

To get the benefits ZMA can offer, it is of great importance to take it when there is no calcium in the stomach (not with milk or whey protein). The best time is within an hour of your bedtime.

People supplementing with ZMA often report great side effects - they sleep better. The importance of quality sleep to building muscle should never be minimized. It is this time that the hormones come out in full force and the majority of muscle is built

Several studies have shown great results for ZMA. Testosterone increases of about 30% and strength increases 2.5 times greater than placebo groups in one study.

There is criticism of the studies that show ZMA effective. These criticisms usually center around the fact that the test subjects are athletes on high protein diets. Increased protein intake (and resulting increased calcium intake) along with high-intensity exercise are likely two major contributing factors to these noted deficiencies. Because if you are training for mass gain then you are (or should be) on a high-protein diet and exercising intensely, these criticisms seem a little absurd.

Other criticism attacks some of the studies' credibility based on their financial backing.

ZMA will always be looked at suspiciously because of the way it was originally promoted. Balco Labs basically provided performance-enhancing drugs to top athletes in exchange for ZMA endorsements. Bonds, for instance, gave a lot of the credit for his dramatic physique transformation to ZMA. Obviously, this was not the case. ZMA certainly doesn't have those kinds of capabilities.

For those trying to increase muscle mass and doing so through intense exercise and increased protein intake, ZMA may be worth a shot. Supplementing with ZMA will provide some benefits for those experiencing the deficiencies (but only those with defeciencies).

How do you know if you're deficient?

Well, you can get tested. Or you can simply try the product and see if you notice any positive differences.

i agree, i feel it had some gh/test boosting affects when i took it, i believe that it advertises that so...

no real way to know if you need to take it unless you get tested. if your feeling tired alot, might as well try it. i wouldnt buy the designer brands if i were you, not worth the money until you see if it will work for you. no real side effects, very safe to take.

You could go on with ZMA. It contains Zinc, Magnesium and vitamin B6.

Taking it before the bed will increase your natural level of testosterone and growth hormone. It's going to help you sleep as well.

Be very careful to not take it at the same time of something containing calcium, since your body is going to absorb it in priority. Your ZMA would be a lost of money in this case.

I love ZMA, even tried ZMK another good product. Helps me sleep and I can see it helps me recover as well. Takes several days to recover if I don't take it.

I think one of the best products I used was Lean Dreams by Alri. I only used it at first because I hade some samples with some inventory but i felt good as hell when I woke up.
