I'm on a Ketogenic diet, doing cardio five times a week and lifting weights three times a week. Right now my main goal is to lose the extra weight. From what I read our body burns carbohydrates, then fat, then protein. So should I just let my body be fueled by my fat stores alone for now? Should I not bother with protein shakes until after I reach my goal weight?

What your body uses as an energy source depends on the situation. For the most part just limit your protein to .9 g/lb of LBM to maintain ketosis. Whey protein is not a great choice because of its rapid breakdown into aminos some of which in excess can be converted to glucose, which has the possibility of taking you out of ketosis. If your going to use it, it wouldnt be a horrible choice post workout.

you could try pretty much anything else besides whey. Milk Protein Isolate (80% casein 20%whey) is a good cost effective choice. Although its not very hard to get all your protein from whole food sources on the diet, so its up to you if you really want to go that route.

This is true. Something else to consider is the more you workout, the better the body will become at mobilizing energy stores, and will shift towards fat as an energy source compared to glucose.

Oh yeah - i totally agree with Thomas - I've tried both CKD and Atkins and it is BY FAR the best. i lost weight on Atkins but a lot was muscle and he encourages bad fats like bacon.

Definately. But you have to consider on CKD fat intake to some extent has somewhat of a lesser impact than on a regular diet, even cholesterol levels are reported to drop in many individuals.

Atkins is more of a "lifestyle" diet. CKD is tailored towards athletes, the carb loads really work wonders.
