I was reading up on the Layne Norton article on a good diet and it said "I also suggest consuming a shake composed of 30-40g of whey protein along with dextrose or maltodextrin during their workout. The carbohydrates in the shake should account for about 20% (Is it even possible to have a shake with 30-40 g of whey + dextrose or maltodextrin and get that to equal 20% of my daily carb intake???) of one's total daily carbohydrate intake." Iv been tryin to read up as much as i can on dextrose or maltodextrin but thought i would ask what everybody thought of them. So if you know anything on dextrose or maltodextrin i would love to hear it!

The reason for it is because many people believe that consuming a shake with protein and carbs during your workout is more effective at helping your muscles recover and get stronger because the body has the energy source to repair and provide energy as you lift. Although I do see the logic in it, I personally don't do it, because most of the time I consume some sort of NO product pre workout and something like that would decrease the pump I am getting from my NO product. If you are not taking a NO product then by all means try it. I think 20% of your carbs is attainable, you can use something like a waxymaize product or a carb shake, ABB makes one called Carboforce, its filled with carbs, just take it after your protein shake with dextrose and maltodextrin. Here is some info on both of them, hope it helps you:

Dextrose:
Better known today as glucose, this sugar is the chief source of energy in the body. Glucose is chemically considered a simple sugar. It is the main sugar that the body manufactures. The body makes glucose from all three elements of food, protein, fat and carbohydrates, but in largest part from carbohydrates. Glucose serves as the major source of energy for living cells. It is carried to each cell through the bloodstream. The cells cannot, however, use the glucose without the help of insulin. When sampled in blood, glucose is tested in transit.

MALTRINŽ Maltodextrins and Corn Syrup Solids

What is a maltodextrin?
MALTRINŽ maltodextrins are easily digestible carbohydrates made from natural corn starch. The starch is cooked, and then acid and/or enzymes are used to break the starch into smaller polymers (a process similar to that used by the body to digest carbohydrate).
MALTRINŽ maltodextrins are generally sold as dried powders.
MALTRINŽ maltodextrins are polymers of dextrose (sometimes labeled "glucose polymers").
MALTRINŽ maltodextrins do not contain significant quantities of protein, fat or fiber.
MALTRINŽ maltodextrins are not produced from and do not contain malt products.
Corn-based maltodextrins are safe for patients with celiac disease since they do not contain proteins from wheat, barley, oats or rye.
MALTRINŽ maltodextrins are not known to contain MSG.
Diabetics should follow the advice of their physicians. MALTRINŽ maltodextrin’s glycemic index should be considered metabolically equivalent to glucose (dextrose).
The finished product…

Is easily digestible
Is a convenient source of energy
Contains approximately 4 calories per gram
Is cold-water soluble
Has low or no sweetness
Helps in producing many liquid and dried nutritional products
MALTRINŽ maltodextrins and corn syrup solids are each mixtures of glucose polymers produced by the controlled depolymerization of corn starch. They are most often categorized by dextrose equivalence (DE). DE is a measure of reducing power compared to a dextrose standard of 100. The higher the DE, the greater the extent of starch depolymerization, resulting in a smaller average polymer size.

MALTRINŽ maltodextrins are defined by the FDA as products having a DE less than 20. They are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) food ingredients. Maltodextrins are excellent solids builders for standard and low-fat products. They are effective spray-drying aids for flavors, fruit juices, and other hard-to-dry products. They also are easily digestible carbohydrates for nutritional beverages.

MALTRINŽ corn syrup solids are defined by the FDA as dried glucose syrup with a DE of 20 or higher. They are also considered a GRAS ingredient. Corn syrup solids have moderate sweetness and low viscosity. They are used to build solids in meat and dairy products, as a nutrition source in infant formulas, and as a drying aid for spray-dried fats.

MALTRIN QDŽ maltodextrins and MALTRIN QDŽ corn syrup solids are both quick-dispersing forms of the standard MALTRINŽ products. These products are produced by an agglomeration process that increases particle size and lowers bulk density compared to standard products. They are easily dispersed into water or other aqueous-based systems and are commonly used in consumer products such as dry mixes.

glycogen is the main energy source your muscles use during a weight training session or anaerobic exercise, therefore you need to supply your body with carbs which convert to glucose, and dextrose is pure glucose so it saves the body from having to break it down to glucose giving you readily available energy to use. also it causes an insulin spike, insulin being the most anabolic compound in your body provides a good environment to build mass. it will also stop your body from coverting amino acids/protein/muscle for energy. but all this is already explained in laynes post. read it thoroughly and then read it again. it is an amazing piece of info.

it's not good to have too much food in your stomach while you're working out.. by having a calorie and carb dense shake during your workout, you're not doing very much because you're body is using all the blood to make your muscles work. not to digest anything.

yeah but for a NO product, empty stomach is better, it allows the NO to properly circulate through the blood and enduce the "pump"!

A good carb drink is ABB Carbo Force, or you can go with a Waximaize product, a couple of companies make it but I really liked the one by IDS. Can get it here
