i have seen this pop up over and again, so ill ask. i am a paramedic so i understand what dextrose is; in my line of work we give to hypoglycemic pt's with a low BGL. it is admin I.V. commonly called D50. so when i see it talked about im confused( which at times is often LOL) what form of dextrose are you taking and where do you get it. iknow about the end of my wo i hit the proverbial wall so i think adding this is something i am interested in trying. if you guys could un-confuse me i would be greatful

dextrose monohydrate (glucose). you can buy it in a pharmacy, and some stores sell it too. well in the uk they do.

bulldog, you can use pretty much any carb source to replenish glycogen post workout, oats are a good example - but I understand they are someimtes tough to mix and take down.

Dextrose is a nice and cheap source, but as I'm sure you know, it is very high GI..it will lead to a spike in blood sugar levels, and then a quick drop off which makes a lot of people "crash". I would consider mixing your dex 50/50 with SuperCARB from Avant Research. It is the same make up as sugar, but with a GI rating of 32.

it is a fast absorbing carbohhydrate which is needed postworkout to re-fuel your muscle. it causes a spike in insulin which is what you want straight after a workout, but make sure you get a solid meal about an hour to 1.5 hours later i.e brown rice, chicken breast.

hope this helps

The whole high GI (what you're fast absorbing) is somewhat over-hyped. People tend to forget, or the just don't know, that post excercise glut-4 receptors are stimulated, these receptors really are not picky about what you give them, so long as it can be broken down in to glucose.

if you are still worried about the "speed" of refueling, sure throw in some dextrose, but I would throw in the superCARB so you can still get your spike from the dex, and then sustain steady blood sugar levels from the much lower GI superCARB.

i think the high GI is mostly for the spike in insuln and its anti catabolic effects... but i agree that you should mix it with a moderate GI carb source as well... because of the "crash".

That's why dextrose is only used post wo with the med gi carbs later on.
