I’m 35 and started training when I was 15. I can’t say that I was serious the whole time. In fact the last couple of years have been very lax. I was serious through my late teens and early twenties, but didn’t gain much weight. I competed in some powerlifting meets at 181lbs, but at almost 6’ tall my competitors had much shorter lifts to complete. At 27 I became pretty dedicated and went from a low of 178 to 231 in 9 months of nothing but lifting, eating (that’s where the 8000 to 9000 calories came in), and sleeping. Got up to 250lbs at about 15% body fat. Then I got married, moved, got a new job, built a new house, got another new job, and started building another new house. During that time lifting definitely took a back seat. My current stats are around 6’, like I said, 230lbs give or take a few, about 20% body fat. My lifts are pretty low right now, but very steadily increasing (bench in the mid 300s, squats about the same, don’t deadlift at the moment).
One of the main reasons I posted this is that I’m planning for the future. I know what my natural limits are, and I know that I am not there yet. I think with muscle memory I should be able to hit my potential pretty quickly, I’m just looking for the jump start after that.
I’ll get back to you on the diet as I’ve been trying to decide my strategy there.
