ACNE TREATMENTS
Tanning Bed
Ultraviolet rays dry excess skin oil very effectively. Best results when used without dark-tanning lotions. Shower after use and apply an aloe-based lotion to noticeably oily areas. Avoid UV exposure while using medications that cause photo sensitivity.

Swimming Pool
Chlorine dries skin oil and reduces bacteria. Shower immediately afterward and apply an aloe-based lotion to reduce oil production.

Panthotenic Acid (Vitamin B5)
Large doses of panthotenic acid have proven to reduce acne. Take 2500 mg four (4) times a day (last dose at bedtime) until acne is under control, and then 1500 mg three (3) times a day for maintenance. Also available as a cream which should be applied 4-6 times a day.

Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide slowly releases oxygen, which has an antibacterial effect. It also causes peeling and drying of skin, which helps to eliminate blackheads and whiteheads. First, wash the affected area of skin with medicated soap and water. Pat dry gently with a towel. Apply enough medicine to cover the affected area and rub in gently once or twice a day. If you have a fair complexion, start with a single daily application at bedtime. Keep the medicine away from eyes, nose, and mouth. Results are noticeable in 1 to several weeks. Side effects: burning, itching, scaling, swelling, or redness. Allergic reactions are not uncommon. Common brands: Clearasil, Noxzema, Oxy, Pan Oxyl.

Isotretinoin (Accutane) - prescription
Isotretinoin is a powerful drug used in the treatment of acne. Isotretinoin decreases the amount of oil produced by the skin's sebaceous (oil) glands. Four to five months of isotretinoin treatment usually leads to clearing of acne for one year or more after the medicine is stopped. Most other acne-controlling medicines are antibacterial agents, which are effective only if the medicine is used daily. Side effects (in order of percent reported): chapped lips, dry skin, mild nosebleeds, eye irritation, joint and muscle pains, temporary hair thinning, rash, intestinal symptoms, urinary symptoms, headache, decreased night vision, depression. Regular blood tests are necessary when you are taking isotretinoin because it can be hard on the liver. Women should not take Isotretinoin while pregnant, and should avoid becoming pregnant while using it. Isotretinoin can cause photosensitivity.

Retin-A - prescription
Unlike many over-the-counter acne treatments, Retin-A has the ability to get beneath the surface of your skin and work where acne begins. Retin-A loosens and expels acne plugs in the skin and prevents new lesions from forming. Apply before bed, about 30 minutes after washing the skin. Side effects: dryness, peeling, redness. Retin-A can cause photosensitivity.

unfortunately i have bad acne due to genetics, not steroids (i've never used them), and have tried every treatment on this list. i actually just got on accutane the other day. anyway, accutane should most definitely not be used as a treatment for steroid-induced acne, especially while on oral steroids, because accutane is extremely hard on the liver, as are oral steroids, and the combination could cause many severe internal problems. in fact, accutane is so hard on the liver by itself that you are not supposed to drink alcohol at all while on it and you must get monthly blood tests to make sure your liver is functioning alright. also, for bodybuilding purposes, you cannot take any vitamins or supplements that contain any vitamin A because accutane is a concentrated vitamin A derivative and any additional vitamin A can cause vitamin A poisoning. aside from accutane, any of the other acne treatments are safe and effective for many people, including those using steroids.

Anyone have experience with accutane? my doc's tried 2 antibiotics got rid of a rash i had but didnt help much with shoulder and back acne, i was supposed to be on it for 3months but i couldn't even stand 3weeks liver was randomly getting like "shots" of pain randomly in class, i was pretty hydrated as well. so he said if they dont work ill have to go to a specialist and most likely get some accutane, i hear the sides on accutane are PRETTY BAD. True?

Acutane sucks but works great. A lot of little side effects to it but works better then anything out there.

accutane has some scary side effects but is by far the best thing for severe acne that other stuff cant touch. a buddy of mine had bad pimples in gr9 and 10 and then over the summer he came back to school with perfect skin. i asked him just this past semester what the hell happened and he told me he used accutane. my parents wouldnt let me because of the side effects but i used tetracyclene to little effect. this vitamin-A Acid Gel stuff ive been using for a couple years now and it really helps quite a bit. at first youll break out terrible. then after that it clears it up quite a bit. im nearing the end of puberty so im hopin soon i can get rid of this ****. but its forsure cleared up a TON since gr9 and 10.

yeah, accutane works for the entire body, which is especially good for people who have some acne on their chest and backs in addition to their faces (like me). accutane actually permanently shrinks the oil glands in the skin as well as decreases the actual oil secretion. therefore, your acne will be better and stay better even after you stop taking it. some people to require a second cycle though if it comes back some.

a lot of rumors go around about these so-called terrible side effects of accutane but honestly, after talking to many users, doctors, and taking if for a little while myself, which i am currently doing, the most common side effects you will feel are very chapped lips, dry skin, some redness of the skin, and dehydration. some less common side effects include tiredness/trouble sleeping, sore joints, and headaches. some people do experience some depression so you shouldn't have a history of mental issues. they go on to list all of these other crazy side effects but from what i understand and have been told by doctors, they are extremely rare and are basically the drug company's way of covering their ass.

i don't know how bad your acne/rash is but they usually won't prescribe it unless it is pretty severe acne. the funny part is that it is actually even more of a controlled substance than steroids and opiates.

good post, as a lot of these products give you acne whether on your face, shoulder, or somewhere. i recommend drinking lots of water to keep it minimal

lots of reasons why, it might be cause you were not drinking water while on oral. or the dose was to high and this might have made your organs work harder. or even having acne prior to steroid use, the steroids might re activate acne temporarily.
