Lets say the halflife is 10 days and the substance is 200mg. after those 10 days the substance will "break down" to half of that which is 100mg. After yet another 10 days it's down to 50mg.. 10 days after that (30 days after the injection) it's down at 25mg.

if you didnt know the half life then you wouldnt know when the required dose needed to be taken.. lets take Deca for example.. 2 weeks is the half life.. so for the full effect. ei full life.. would be 4 weeks.. which conclused that the substance will be active with in 4 weeks.. with weekly injection.. this keeps the half life steady and consistent..
