Former ECW star Grunge passes away

Mike "Johnny Grunge" Durham was pronounced dead on arrival at an Atlanta area hospital this morning.

The only available details were he was at a friend's house in Peachtree City, GA, and was gasping for air and rushed to the hospital. The preliminary diagnosis from the hospital is that it was said to have to do with complications from sleep apnea.

Grunge and the late Rocco Rock (Ted Petty), as the tag team of Public Enemy, were the first major stars created by ECW in a program against The Funk Brothers. They became ECW's most popular act, to the point they were subject to a bidding war of sorts between WCW and WWF. However, taken out of the ECW environment, they weren't as successful.

Grunge, whose age is believed to be 39, was said by friends to have never been the same since Petty's death.
Grunge was one half of the Public Enemy tag team with Rocco Rock, aka Teddy Petty, who passed away in September of 2002 following a massive heart attack. Grunge was said to have never been the same since his passing. Public Enemy were first created in ECW and became subject to a bidding war between both WCW and WWF.

That's definitely a melancholy surprise. I remember Public Enemy a bit, although I never really got into ECW. I remember they had a brief stint in WCW, which began at the Hardcore Invitational(which was crazy and funny to a fault) at Starcade '99. Bret Hart has a section on his DVD set in which he pays homage to some of his friends in the industry who've passed on; it's always sad to see these men who sacrifice so much leave this life so young.
