Vera's problem is simple, when he was a heavyweight he should've been a light heavyweight, now that he's light heavy he looks like he can drop to middle.
The worst thing for a striker to do is wrestle, especially against Randy who will force his opponents to get arm weary. I know the match was probably a bit boring because it was wrestling, which I enjoyed very much, but I think for his first match back at 205 it's not too bad all things considered.
Vera lost because of his inability to execute his own game plan and finish. Just like against Krystoph who was overworked by the time of that match and gassed out. It seems Vera is trying to build himself as the archetypal counter striker but what he doesn't realize is that most of the guys that like to counter strike can also initiate pretty well.
I liked the fight, Couture fought very smart. He wore down Vera for two rounds and turned it on in the third. Couture's main gameplan since he was involved in so many title fights has been just that, wear them down the turn it on. Vera was tired by the second round he should've been able to capitalize on that nice combo he had. Even at the end of the third Vera was throwing arm punches because he was so tired. |
