Report: Carwin-Velasquez scrapped, Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 106

Quote:
Minnesota Martial Arts Academy released a series of shocking tweets Wednesday night revealing that UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will face Shane Carwin at UFC 106 in Las Vegas, NV on Nov. 21. Messages were left with Velasquez's representatives, but there is no word out of his camp at this time.

Below are the tweets in question:

* Just got word. UFC 105 on November 21 will feature Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin.

from Seesmic

* Don't know about Cain. Just heard they offered Lesnar a fight with Carwin.

from Seesmic in reply to dmiller21

* I clicked a wrong key. It is actually UFC 106. It will be at Mandalay Bay in Vegas. UFC 105 is in England.

from Seesmic

Word of the potential matchup spread around the MMA blogoshere like wildfire, eventually reaching the ears of Carwin himself.

"Lots of talk going around right now," Carwin blogged on his personal website. "It seems to stem from a twitter post out of MN. I can't confirm or deny anything I can just tell you guys that I am training harder then ever and your support and loyalty will carry me through any fight they send my way. With you guys on my side I am ready for whatever happens. Stay tuned to the site or UFC.com for any official news about me.

Although confirmation from official sources has yet to be directly established, Lesnar's representatives appear to have confirmed the news via twitter and Carwin wouldn't deny the news, making it likely.

They question at this point becomes: Why was Velasquez passed over and, if healthy, who will he face at UFC 104?

We'll have more on this breaking story as soon as news becomes available.
Thoughts?

Edit: I just checked wikipedia and it said Velasquez suffered an undisclosed injury, granted, it didn't cite it. Guess whatever the reason is will show up later today.

This should be fun. The KO in UFC 96 was beastly. I still have a feeling Brock will take it by you never know, Carwin has a strong right hook.

I think it depends where it goes. Carwin is a more aggressive and experienced striker in terms of how well he can hit the button, which hes done in two of his three UFC fights. I have a feeling it will look like the Heath Herring fight in terms of control if Carwin isn't able to keep it a striking match.

Thomas for once I actually agree with you, lol. I think that Carwin has a wrestling background so he would get man handeled like Herring did, but Brock will still whoop that ass!

Haha. Carwin according to sources has NCAA wrestling experience, but against Neil Wain he looked like he was struggling a bit to pin him against the cage. Against Gonzaga he got rocked then taken down, but to his credit he stood back up.

Carwin also has to be more mindful of his foot work, even though gonzaga caught him out of the clinch, he landed a punch at the exact moment when carwin was doing a back step. Alot of his foot work at that point was back and forth unless he was rushing forwards. If his movement is too stale he will get caught quickly with a takedown.

UFC 106: Shane Carwin will face Brock Lesnar on Nov. 21 at UFC blog for UFC news, results, videos, rumors, fights, pics and tickets — MMAmania.com

MMAmania is also reporting it. Apparently Velasquez isn't injured, contradicting what I first posted, and will still fight at UFC 104.

Quote:
Undefeated heavyweight behemoth Shane Carwin has reportedly been pulled from his Oct. 24 bout against fellow fast-rising prospect Cain Velasquez to fight current champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 21.

Rumors began to circulate last night after MMAmadness.com broke the news and MMAmania.com has since been able to confirm the big shake up.

Carwin and Velasquez were originally paired up for UFC 104 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., to determine a number one contender for Brock’s title.

With Randy Couture and Antonio Nogueira having already committed to the main event of UFC 102, there were some concerns within the organization that a suitable opponent would not be found for Lesnar by year’s end following his destruction of Frank Mir at UFC 100.

There was also the possibility of eliminating two major prospects within the division in a very short period of time had the winner of Carwin vs. Velasquez gone on to be defeated by the champ.

Velasquez will still compete at UFC 104 as scheduled and with a victory would likely face the winner of Lesnar vs. Carwin at some point in 2010.

UFC 106 is expected to feature MMA elder statesman Mark “The Hammer” Coleman as he welcomes the return of the surgically repaired “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz in a 205-pound clash.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this developing fight card as it becomes available.

Too bad he'll probably never fight in the US again

I hope Carwin wins. Lesnar doesn't have that much size on him so it will be interesting.

Ben Rothwell has been announced as Cain Velasquez's opponent for UFC 104.

UFC 104: Ben Rothwell vs Cain Velasquez booked for Oct. 24 at UFC blog for UFC news, results, videos, rumors, fights, pics and tickets — MMAmania.com
Quote:
On the heels of Shane Carwin being scratched from UFC 104 to challenge Brock Lesnar for the division title in November, MMAmania.com (UFC blog for UFC news, results, videos, rumors, fights, pics and tickets — MMAmania.com) has learned that former IFL and Affliction heavyweight standout Ben Rothwell has agreed to step in for “The Engineer” versus Cain Velasquez on Oct. 24.

Rothwell is coming off a dominating technical knockout win over Chris Guillen at Adrenaline II back in Dec. 2008. Prior to that, “Big” was riding a career high 13-fight win streak before running into former UFC heavyweight champion, Andrei Arlovski, during the inaugural Affliction event in July 2008 .

Before the loss, he had defeated former UFC champion Ricco Rodriguez, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 standout Krzysztof Soszynski, Roy “Big Country” Nelson and others.

The Miletich Fighting Systems (MFS)-trained fighter was on course to throw hands with Chase Gormley at the same event however, the UFC quickly shuffled the deck after Carwin’s departure.

Velasquez is coming off the complete and utter destruction of Cheick Kongo at UFC 99 back on June 13. The talented wrestler out of American Kickboxing Academy pushed his perfect record to 6-0 in his first decision win after rattling off five straight technical knockout stoppages.

The experience and talent of Rothwell will provide him with perhaps his stiffest test to date.

UFC 104 will feature a main event between UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida and challenger Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. It’s expected that Velasquez will earn the next title shot with a win pending the outcome of UFC 106.
And Freak, I'm with you. I want to see Carwin win.

It's all about the contract in the end, Brock needs to fight three times a year. A ufc 104 fight between valasquez and carwin would've delayed that.
