I understand why BJ quit, I understand that, but at the same point there was a craziness and unknown factor for BJ that was there, that will be forever gone. I am utterly devastated at the lack of ability to even contend with GSP.

That's one of the things BJ repeated over and over in those training shows. How he'd never quit. And then what does he do. Quit. His mantra was GSP was weak for tapping in the fight (against Serra wasn't it?) and how he could never do that and that would always be his advantage. Goes to show, never say never.

It is no different than when his BJJ was subpar and then he goes on to earn his black belt. Although I would like to see Anderson Silva and GSP; this fight is reinforcing that maybe people shouldn't be able to move up in weight classes, only down. Dana said that GSP could move up to 185 to fight Silva but not BJ. I just wonder if even having GSP move up would be a wrong move.

I see why they only want them to move up instead of down. If they move up it's closer to their "natural weight" and can make for a better fight. If they were cutting
another weight class down (as almost all cut some weight to make fight weight) it might make for lackluster performances, especially if the heavier guy won and had to repeatedly cut to defend that title. If they win the heavier title they might eventually over time "move up" to that heavier weight class as they gain muscle weight, grow and strengthen and evolve in general.

The mystique of many world class athletes has recently been demoralizing. We have Royce Gracie test positive for steroids, De La Hoya calls it quits in the ring, BJ calls it quits in the cage, can there ever just be a pure fighter? Is GSP that fighter?
|
I don't know if GSP is that fighter. I think anyone near the top of their game is looking for a bigger challenge, wherever that may lead them. Those whose best years are behind them though, well that's a different story, and they should probably pursue other paths.

Yeah I expected the usual trash talk but
how Penn said what he said made more of an impact on me especially with how he was handling his training.

I hope his talk was all hype, but the way he sounded from those shows didn't seem like trash talk/hype. He came off more as a spoiled rich a-hole, who normally had everything handed to him and never had to really work for anything.
