I could not get the link up (don't fear it would be my connection playin up).

But if it is saying Bas is coming back to fight, thats sad.

I think it was onebigeric and myself were discussing how the greats just can't stay away and then come back and get an ass woopin from some young punk and it just ruins the hole memory of a great warrior.

Ali, Holyfield, Leonard, Gracey and Shamrock all done the same to thier careers.

Hope he doesn't embarress himself.

I definitely remember discussing said topic with you Pumba, and quite honestly, I see the same thing happening here. Rutten was primarily a striker, and while that can carry you on TUF, it just can't cut it anymore in open competition. It's the nature of the beast, as it were; styles themselves are a moot point in MMA, namely because everyone is reading out of the same book.

I remember seeing Oleg destroy a professed Kenpo(my first art, big on strikes; studied for fifteen years) practitioner in about nine seconds; they charged, and the Russian Bear took him down and locked him out in near record time. That opened my eyes a lot as to the need of being a well-rounded competitor. Unless Bas has been really busy on developing his mat game, I see him joining the ranks of solid-style legends newly humbled in modern day MMA, as Royce Gracie has recently done.

Yeah onebigeric, he has had alot of time to study these guys and he seems quite intelligent. I can't work it out. What's he need to prove, the money ain't there so why?

Maybe a need to reassert oneself in a sport that's seemed to change so much over the years? Making a triumphant comeback to capture the fleeting glory of days past? I feel in MMA, there's a habit of throwing phrases such as, "Yeah, Rutten was a legend, but he'd be destroyed against today's fighters...ditto Royce, Ken, etc..." This kind of thing only works in pro wrestling nowadays, and even then it's definitely hit and miss. The learning curve and recent experience gap just seems to be too daunting for a single-styled old schooler like Rutten to really make a heavy impact again, or any real impact at all, for that matter. Legends definie a sport and blaze the way for future generations, but they're not all that great at returning to it years down the road to compete with a fresh new crop. Ultimately it just diminishes an amazing legacy with a series of recent losses and slight wins.

You threw it out perfectly, Pumba; what do any of these men still have to prove?

Although if Royce's rumored payoff is accurate(1.3mil+percentage of ticket sales), a really sad prospect is that it's worth it to these men to diminish their legacy for a six to seven figure payoff with a beating attatched to it. Even though Shamrock's return has been less than stellar, he definitely hasn't been in it for the money; gives we few still left on Team Shamrock some definite comfort.
