Mundine in limbo as Kessler focuses on title defence

ANTHONY Mundine may have secured a second shot at World Boxing Association super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler by defeating Danny Green on Wednesday night, but the Dane is in no hurry to accommodate his latest challenger.
And when he does, those in his camp are hugely confident their man will repeat his victory over Mundine. Kessler, unbeaten in 37 fights and with 28 KOs, already is committed to a title defence in the Brondby Hall, Copenhagen, against Ukraine challenger Vitali Tsypko (16-1-1) on June 9.
He would not be available to face Mundine until late in the year.
The Viking Warrior's promoter, Bettina Palle, said Mundine would not come onto Kessler's radar until after the Tsypko fight.
"We are only focusing on Mikkel defending his title as world champion against Tsypko," Palle said.
"If he doesn't manage to beat Tsypko, all thoughts regarding future world title fights would be superfluous anyway. All our antennae are exclusively pointed toward Mikkel's title defence on June 9."
Palle told The Sun-Herald she had no doubt Kessler would be too strong for Mundine, as he was when he scored a comprehensive points win over "the Man" in Sydney in August last year.
"Mikkel is willing to fight anyone, anywhere, as long as the conditions are right," she said. "He beat Mundine once without having been able to prepare properly due to his back injury, and will do it again.
"I'd be happy to let Mikkel travel back to Australia. That would be no problem, but of course terms would have to be discussed. I am confident we would get the same result, maybe even a shorter fight."
Palle said on her website that both she and Kessler, who did not watch the bout on Wednesday, were disappointed by the result.
"Perhaps deep down both Mikkel and I would have preferred Danny Green to have won," she added.
"It's always hard to set yourself up mentally strong against an adversary whom you've already defeated by a relatively safe margin. We have to accept the opposite happened and it's up to me to ensure Mikkel gets the home advantage."
Mundine must decide whether to take a break from the sport in view of Kessler's immediate plans, or stay active with a non-title bout in the meantime. He is likely to have the money to lure Kessler to Australia as the fight would be a much bigger drawcard in Sydney than at any venue in Denmark.
Mundine's popularity and acceptance by the general public will undoubtedly have been boosted by the manner of his win and his graciousness in the aftermath.
