RECAP
Matt Hughes is on the line
Matt was notified 3 days before the announcment that he was facing Royce
Gracie. He wasn’t that excited when he heard that, because it was just an
opponent to him. He says that Gracie has more to be nervous about because
this is his UFC comeback. Matt was watching Royce before he started
fighting and always thought he could beat him. He says that he is such a
well rounded athlete that he is way above the fighters that Royce faced in
’93.
Dave asks about how Hughes’ life has changed since Ultimate Fighter. Matt
says that his sponsorship deals have really blossomed and that it has really
gotten him big match opportunities like this match. He hasn’t watched this
season except for one episode, he says he hates Tito, calls him an idiot and says that Ortiz is a fake
playing to the camera. He says that editing does show misjudgment, so that
the reasoning for his actions was not shown all the time.
Dave asks if the fighters were as motivated when Hughes coached. Hughes says
that its really the editing so you really can’t tell if when Shamrock showed
tapes of himself it could have been on a day of rest.
In the closing moment Dave asks what it would take for Brock Lesnar to be a
force in MMA. Matt says that Brock needs to learn striking, submissions, and
that his wrestling alone will not take him to the top. He said professional wrestlers are outstanding athletes and that he could never do what they do. He believes that Brock, walking in today, would be competitive with many of the heavyweights in UFC, but he has to learn more to beat the top heavyweights.
