What is the point in using a bench shirt. I really don't understand it. Clearly he is strong but I would be more impressed seeing how much he could bench without it.

i didnt like them either when they first came out in fact i could do 37.5kg more without them but that was the old Inzer Blast Shirt which was a loada toss that just cut your arms off.
now i have a lot of respect for my shoulders and pay more attention to rear delts than i ever used to and a loose shirt just helps protect my shoulders but i dont go over the top with it with double ply etc

This kind of weight would tear his chest/shoulders to shit if he didn't have a bench shirt on. So for one, protection.

In my personal use of a bench shirt(495lb max), I feel as though it focuses my strength. When the bar is comming down, I feel as though the shirt takes the pressure off and on the way up, it keeps you in the groove. W/O a shirt, my max is only 335lb.

That kind of weight could kill you and you just got to have respect for that ! besides there is plenty of room for all types of lifting and if the general public want to see realy big weights lifted then thats the way we must go if we want to attract more attention to the sport it dont stop those who are already adicted to the sport anyway from lifting however they prefer.
