A billion - the true story about a Billion Dollars

This is too true to be very funny.
The next time you hear a politician use the
Word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
Whether you want the politicians spending
YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
But one advertising agency did a good job of
Putting that figure into some perspective in
One of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in caves.
D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two
feet.
E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and
20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at
New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division .
Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the
Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild
New Orleans. Interesting number. What does it mean?
A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of
New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.
B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans, your home gets $1,329,787 for repairs.
C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family
gets $2,066,012.

Washington, D.C .. HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators
broken??

Tax his land,
Tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes is the rule.
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his ties,
Tax his shirts,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.
Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his booze,
Tax his beers,
If he cries,
Tax his tears.
Tax his bills,
Tax his gas,
Tax his notes,
Tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.
If he hollers,
Tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.
Put these words upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom!'
And when he's gone,
We won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance TAX!!
Accounts Receivable Tax
Building Permit Tax
CDL License Tax
Cigarette Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Dog License Tax
Federal Income Tax
Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)
Fishing License Tax
Food License Tax
Fuel Permit Tax
Gasoline Tax
Hunting License Tax
Inheritance Tax
Inventory Tax
IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax),
IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax),
Liquor Tax,
Luxury Tax,
Marriage License Tax,
Medicare Tax,
Property Tax,
Real Estate Tax,
Service charge taxes,
Social Security Tax,
Road Usage Tax (Truckers),
Sales Taxes,
Recreational Vehicle Tax,
School Tax,
State Income Tax,
State Unemployment Tax (SUTA),
Telephone Federal Excise Tax,
Telephone Federal Universal Service Fe e Tax,
Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax,
Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax,
Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax,
Telephone State and Local Tax,
Telephone Usage Charge Tax,
Utility Tax,
Vehicle License Registration Tax,
Vehicle Sales Tax,
Watercraft Registration Tax,
Well Permit Tax,
Workers Compensation Tax.

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago,
And our nation was the most prosperous in the
world.

We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in
the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What happened? Can you spell 'politicians!'

And I still have to 'press 1' for English.
I hope this goes around THE USA at least a billion times

lol...100 years ago you didn;t have many of the items being taxed nor the staggering population you have now. 100 years ago, your foreign policy looked a little different too...though teddy and the rough riders were still out kicking some ass it didn't seem to cost as much.

I'm also not sure regressing on women's rights would advance your nation...I mean aren't you guys currently liberating countries that keep their women at home?

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

1 year = 31,536,000 seconds
1 billion seconds = 31 years
This year = 2009 - 31 is not 1959, its 1978

A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

If there was a jesus.

525,600 minutes in a year

2009=1,055,930,400 minutes, off by 106 years.

But onto the main point. Taxation is a good thing.

Well thanks for clearing all of that up.

And yes there is the historical person Jesus. People can argue after that point but that is a documented fact.

I've never owned a business, so correct me if I'm wrong. Inventory tax; a tax on the value of all the commercial goods in your possesion that you plan to sell. Sales tax; the tax levied by the government on the actual sale of your goods to another citizen/entity. Then, income tax; you will again pay tax on the income you earned from that sale, that was already taxed, of that particular good, which was taxed in your warehouse. How many d@mn times is the government gonna take a slice out of our pies? Sure are a lot of taxes in our country that rebelled over taxation problems. And something I told my political science professor; "The bottom rung of society that pays income tax, pays around 20% of what they make to the government, right? Well, for those of you who believe in God, He only asks for 10%. So what are we getting for double God's rates?".....

Strictly what every citizen recieves. A national army that protects the people from those that seek to do harm against them. Local police forces that protect the welfare of the people under their jurisdiction.

Other stuff that taxes pay for welfare programs, roads, schools, public housing, government work programs, government funded reaserch that makes advances in various fields.

It also depends what inventory it is, some inventory isn't taxed and inventory tax is dynamic, if I were to purchase a tv for example, and a new model comes out and the tv drops in value or I dont anticipate my ability to make the sale, the tax drops.

It was a joke question, Thomas, but I feel ya. Although many, myself included, would argue that things like welfare programs, public housing, those kinda social programs are beyond the purview of government. What I mean is that some of us, well many of us I suppose, believe that government's sole function is to protect and uphold every persons natural rights, nothing less but also nothing more. Judging by your reply, I'd guess that you are rather politcally informed, so I'm probably not telling you anything new :o) Cheers bro!

Can you please tell me how a 2.979 trillion dollar budget is a good thing? This isn't even including the unknown cash expenditures from programs like social security and welfare, and trillions created and distributed by the fed to banks around the world. Nobody really knows for certain but our gross national debt is around 10 trillion dollars right now and some estimate even higher. The point is that our government spending is simply not sustainable. Unfortunately, it seems that as our standard of living continues to decrease and people will call for increased government involvement and more social programs.

Well, without me having the budget to look at to criticize the best way I would explain the extent of the budget is to prevent long term inflation such as purchasing foreign oil when we have our own to use, when ours runs out we have no way to control costs, right now spending the 600-800 mil a year gives us a bargaining chip.

The military costs I believe run up close to another trillion, that's also important.
