Hi there,

Figured I'd jump right in on the posting, hope this is the appropriate thread category.

Well as stated in my intro post, I've dropped 176 pounds over the past almost 9 months. One of the supervisors at work told me about this diet, stating she lost 55 pounds. I tried it for 2 weeks, and lost 10 pounds. I halted my diet over the last couple weeks because after dropping so much weight and being 100% dedicated, I figured I owed myself a reward.
This past weekend I had a party for my oldest baby's 16th birthday, and the weekend before I went to Vegas. I was doing research about this type of diet which apparently is similar to Atkins, but also in my google'ing found the term Ketogenic diet.

Before I ramble on about my opinions and fire off a dozen questions, I thought I'd post the diet exactly as I had it given to me and ask you folks your opinions. Good, bad, what you'd add or take away. Like I said, I did it for 2 weeks and it was fun, and before I jump into it again I wanted to get a little guidance. I still have plenty of weight to drop and I am pretty set on the idea of a ketogenic diet.

Copy & Paste of the "New Mayo Clinic Diet"

NEW MAYO CLINIC DIET

BREAKFAST
½ grapefruit
2 eggs, any style
2 slices of bacon

LUNCH
½ grapefruit
Salad, any dressing
Meat, any style, any amount

DINNER
½ grapefruit
Meat, any style, any amount (fish may be substituted)
Veggies, any style, any red or green (cooked in butter or any seasoning), or salad as above.

BEDTIME SNACK
Glass of tomato juice or skim milk

INSTRUCTIONS

1) At lunch and dinner, you can eat until you are full. Until you cannot eat anymore.
2) Don’t eliminate anything from the diet, especially don’t skip the bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It’s the combination of the foods that BURN FAT.
3) The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
4) Cut down on coffee. It affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit 1 cup at meal time.
5) Don’t eat between meals. If you eat the combination of foods suggested you will not get hungry.
6) NOTE: The diet completely eliminates sugar and starches which are lips and form fat. Fat does not form fat. It helps burn it so you can fry foods in butter and use butter generously on veggies.
7) Do not eat desserts, breads, white vegatables, or sweet patatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salad, or veggies. Eat until you are stuffed. The more of the proper combinations of foods, the more you will lose.
8) You can lose 10 pounds in 10 days. There will be no loss the first 4 days but you will lose 5 pounds on the 5th day. Therefore you will lose 1 to 1 ½ pounds every 2 days until you are where you want to be.

This is given to heart patients needing to lose weight fast for bypass surgery.

All soft drinks need to be diet and caffeine free!

YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE FOLLOWING
White onions, potatoes, celery

YOU MAY HAVE
Red onions, bell peppers, radishes, cucumbers, broccoli, green onions, Spanish leaf lettuce, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, cheese, regular dressing

IMPORTANT
Stay on diet for 12 days
And stop diet for 2 days

as for a CKD diet, there are a couple guys on here who are on it right now, just so you know its a very hard diet to follow, you have low energy since you arent taking in carbs and its probably mentally draining, just letting you know the pre cautions, other wise it is a great diet, you should see great results you just have to be very dedicated and focused!

Thanks Allstar,

So you're saying from what I posted this diet plan is fine as is? And my only drawbacks could possibly be mentally & physically draining because of the low carb intake?

I read a lengthy post here about a CKD, and it seemed like it gave a broad overview...didn't really deal with what they can eat, and how often. By this plan, I can only eat 3 times a day...

As far as focus and dedication...got plenty =)

i dont like the diet plan personally as it only has 3 meals, i wont go against it as its from the mayo i take it and for heart patients, I think just setting up a strict diet would be much better than that.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the 3 meal thing either. I dropped all that weight eating about 6-7 meals a day. Granted it surely wasn't eating the way this diet is layed out.

I like the idea of the ketogenic diet, just trying to set it up so I can know what to eat, and how often I can/should.

Opinions on cheese? I've forever been a cheese lover. Since I've gone without for so long, the idea of having cheese since it's 0 carb is very appealing...

well a CKD diet isis based upon the removal of nearly all carbohydrates from one's diet for a certain period of time. In the absence of carbohydrates, the body will resort to stored fat as it's primary fuel source. Stored fat is broken down into ketones which the body then uses for energy. In order to enter this state of ketosis, one's liver glycogen must be emptied. Ingested carbohydrates are stored in the liver as glycogen, as well as in the muscles. When the liver is depleted of glycogen, a state of ketosis is achieved. Ketones are a by-product of fat burning, therefore while in a state of ketosis, the body is burning stored fat as it's main source of fuel. I'll bypass the explanation as to why this is such a positive occurrence.

The object of a ketogenic diet is to deplete the liver of it's glycogen stores as quickly as possible so that fat burning occurs. This is done by severely restricting carbohydrates and eating only sources of proteins and fats. On a CKD carbohydrate restriction lasts for a total of 5-6 days at which time a 1-2 day carbohydrate loading phase begins wth the carbohydrate loading phase designed to replenish muscle glycogien stores.

Heres the difference between a CKD and a Low Carb Diet..
Basic LOW Carb Diet:

weakness
lethargy
low insulin levels
constant hunger
moderate fat burning
muscle loss
low fat intake
excessively low total calories

Ketogenic Diet:

energy
workout intensity
feelings of well-being
full and satisfied
high fat intake
high level of fat burning
minimal muscle loss
total calories no more than 500 below maintenance

as for cheese I would think you could eat it.

Thanks so much for your input. And sorry about all the continuous questions. I'll hunt around for a ketogenic diet plan on here and see what I come up with
