I was wondering, I know alot of people recommend to consume a slow digesting protein such as a Casein Shake before going to sleep to keep your body anabolic while you are sleeping for the 8 hours or so that you sleep. Now for college students such as myself who don't really want to have any more supplements then we need, can't Cottage Cheese serve as the same function? I have heard it contains alot of casein and that it is a slow digesting protein. If anyone has got input it would be awesome, thanks!

Absolutely. In fact, you may find that cottage cheese is much more popular with people as a pre-bed food.

Additionally, since it is much less aqueous than a shake, it has less of a chance to wake u in the middle of the night to take a piss.

And it can give you a fuller feeling. Studies have shown that a casein shake leaves the user feeling less full hours after vs a whey protein shake. This means that because all dairy has both casein and whey to my knowledge, cottage cheese will probably give you that full feeling longer into the night.

Avoid cheese with fat. Avoid cheese with lots of sugar. Avoid cheese with low amounts of protein unless the serving size is tiny.

You can go with any number of non-fat cheese, but cottage cheese tastes the best in its non-fat form from my experience vs any other non-fat cheese.

whenever i eat cottage cheese i have to eat it with some kind of fruit, but ive heard that eating fruit before you sleep can actually make you catabolic(i dont know if its the fructose or what or if this is even true). just wondering incase i do eat cottage cheese before bed and ill just have to suck it up and eat it plain.

I dont think i have EVER heard eating something with sugars can lead to catabolism. In fact, everything i have heard suggests that sugars are anti-catabolic. However, before bed, this can lead to fat storage, especially with fruits and other sugary foods. This is why most deserts are badddd.

From my understanding, you are much more likely to release insulin later in the day, thus why people stay away from carbohydrate rich foods that usually cause an increase in insulin levels.

I suggest sprinkling salt on the cottage cheese as an alternative. Also, i harp on this alot, but try many different brands/curd sizes. I find that there can be quite a difference between brands. Personally, i go with non-fat Borden brand cottage cheese and i actually enjoy it quite a bit.

I just finished 1 cup of low fat cottage cheese, some almonds, and a can of tuna and I'm off to bed. Keeps me going throughout the night, can't think of anything better to eat before bedtime that isn't in shake form.

Well yes it won't because Casein takes around 6 hours to digest if I recall correctly, but it sure beats having nothing.
