As long as you get your heart rate to the appropriate levels, i dont think it matters much. I actually find my heart rate gets higher on a treadmill than it does outside because i can only run full blast for a short period but on a treadmill im running a bit longer.
And doing HIIT on an elliptical is pretty darn difficult. There are so many different variations and brands. And not all of them allow you to easily push yourself without feeling like you are going to break the machine. And a bike doesnt provide near the core workout that a treadmill or running outside will.
