Anything that has casein protein is good because it digests slowly. There are protein shakes that have casein in them, but it naturally occurs in most dairy products like cheese. Cottage cheese is a personal favorite of mine. As for what not to eat, i'd say avoid anything that has a lot of carbs.

The majority of your fat intake should be eaten in your pre-sleep meal. Carbs should be consumed very little right before bed as well.

Frag Hag said it. You want to consume a casein (slow digesting) protein before you sleep. To prevent catabolism effects and to prevent any muscle atrophy from occurring. This way, your highest potential gains are acquired when you sleep. I'm a fan of a few glasses of milk and cottage cheese before bed.

My presleep meal is usually

500mg magnesium
50mg zinc
10 grams psyllium husk fiber
5 grams fish oil
a huge salad with tuna, broccolli, peppers, onions, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, and whatever other veggies i can find
a olive oil/vinegar dressing

I prefer whole foods over shakes, and cottage cheese and milk kill my stomach (mild lactose intolerance)

I usually throw down 2-3 slices of wheat bread w/ natty pb and milk b4 bed. Shake doesnt cut it for me, I need to feel full.
