Hello,

I am 38 years old, 6'1" tall and 240 lbs. I am over weight and out of shape. I have been reading a lot of thisgs here on this website and because of it I have started back to the gym and am eating more protein than anything else at the time.

Question... I have been back in the gym for two days now and I am just starved after doing my cardio and working out. From what the machines say and with lifting weights I am burning about 700-900 calories while I am there. (It might be more or less because I have no idea how much I am burning by lifting weights etc.) I am walking a brisk mile on the tread-mill and then doing 4 miles on the eliptical. That all takes me slightly under 1 hour. After that I lift weights then hit the showers.

Ok, so I am wanting to get down to 190 lbs but I am concerned because some of the things I am eating, even though protein based, have a bunch of calories! Lentils... After my workout today I ate 3 cups of Lentils. I found out, after I googles the info. about Lentils, that I consumed about 2000 calories just from those 3 cups! AND that is from one freak'in meal!!! I am not looking to bulk up but slim down... Should I be concerned if I am eating more calories even though it is protein based?

Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the dungeon , nice to have you aboard.

Eat small meals 6 to 8 time a day. Drink water, cut out the junk.

Do less cardo before your workout.. Just warm up 5 to 10 minutes, get the body warmed up then hit the weights.

What is your current workout routine.. I also would like to know what exactly your eating on a daily basis.. Do you track your caloric intake daily?

Chris

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. First off I will tell you that I am new to the game. I presently do not track my calories daily but I also dont want you to think that I am pigging out either as I am not. (At least I dont think so...) I will start tracking it though. :-) I drink at leat a gallon a day of water and probably more like 1.5 gallons on the days I work out. I work out 3 days a week (starting off is brutal) Mon, Wed, & Fri. and the other days for now are to recooperate. :-) I do cardio all 3 days for 45 min to an hour. I do arms, back, gut on Mondays. Legs, gut, chest. on Wed. And then I mix it up on Friday and do a little of them all but not as strenuous (More Reps. less weight). I still drink my water all week not just when I work out as I know this is essential.

So, gimme the scoop on the lentils. Am I not seeing something or is that ridiculous on the calories for lentils..!? In your opinion, how many calories should I be eating in a day?

Thanks again.

What is your height and weight ?.

To track your training and meals. Go to the Training log section and look for the threads I created to track Training Journals and Meal journals. They are excel spreadsheets that have built in formulas in them to calculate the number's for you.

Dont eat the pink lentils then. If your cutting, eating super nutrient packed food is going to satisfy your hunger less. Eating the other type of lentils is going to give you less in terms of calories per a cup but they will be more filling because you get to eat more.

Nutrition Facts and Analysis for Lentils, mature seeds, cooked, boiled, with salt

Lentils cooked, boiled.
Calories per cup: 226 (3 cups would be 678 calories)
Calories from fat: 6
Total Carb: 36
Total fiber: 16
Total sugar: 4
Total Protein: 18

Thank you... Well then, it looks like my info. was incorrect and I ate under 700 calories with those 3 cups. The Lentils were brown no pink.

Thanks! I feel better now. :-)

Chris,

Quick question.... Why only do 5-10 minutes on cardio??? I need to sweat dont I??? I am 50lbs overweight. Is weight lifting going to do more for me to burn fat than 45-60 min on the Eliptical? When I am on that thing I sweat like a hog. I am still going to lift weights but what is only 5-10 on cardio going to do for me in the long haul? Please explain.

Thank you,
Homeatlast.

5-10 minutes per day will definately help out, not once a week though, and weight lifting builds muscle, and carrying more muscle turns you into a fat burning machine
