Disadvantages:

Lower intensity while weight training. Weight training's main fuel is muscle glycogen, a low carb diet will result in lower levels of muscle glycogen and lower performance.

Low insulin levels. Insulin is the most anabolic hormone. Insulin triggers protein synthesis, without insulin your protein synthesis (muscle gain) will be drastically diminished.

There are many other disadvantages on the cellular level, but those are the main two.

Well, because it is. Low insulin levels mean you have a pretty much stable level of insulin through the whole day. It's a good diet for cutting, but for bulking its much harder, even with carb loads.

Insulin is not only the most anabolic hormone your body produces, but also the most anti-catabolic. The trick is to maximize insulin levels when your body is most insulin sensitive, and keep levels low when you are most insulin resitant to induce positive nutrient partitioning where carbohydrates are being stored as glycogen, used a fuel during high intensity/calorie demanding training, while increasing rmr, lipolysis and fat oxidation while the body is at rest.
