I recently read an article on bodybuilding.com on bulking. It states that during a bulking phase you only need 500 more calories than your maintenance amount. It says the rest will simply be more to burn off during cutting. Is this true? what do you think?

heres the statement:
In order to gain muscle you only have to eat 500 calories over your maintenance ! Thats right only 500. NO , there is no need to be consuming 5,000 calories a day like most people tell you. Your muscles have a predetermined recovery ability. No matter how much you eat you cannot recover faster then your set ability. Eating only 500 calories above your maintenance will ensure you do not put on fat during the bulking season. This way you will be lean and be able to take your shirt off year round !

i ususally try to aim each meal of mine around 800-1000 calories each time when i bulk. i feel i put on the most mass that way..but i also burn majority of fat off because of my cf problem. so i guess my body reacts differently from yours.

but i would try and consume around 6 meals a day to keep your metabolism kicking in high gear.

how many cals do you eat usually a day? guesstimate?

Yeah that can possibly be right if done natrually. When on any PH or steroid thats when you have to bring in 2-3000more calories because of increased protein synthesis. If done natrually than yes that would be too many calories for a bulk.

try aiming for 20 calories per pound of bodyweight, and lots of complex carbs.

Keep records of your weight. Weigh yourself once per week in the morning. Keep track of your diet and weight and adjust accordingly.

3500 calories = 1lb

I agree with everything everyone has said above me.

also factor in if you're doing cardio....

maintenance calories: 2500
calories burned during cardio: 500
additional calories needed: 1000

the difference between 1000-500 will be the extra calories you consume per day ultimately reaching 3500 extra calories or 1 lb per week....
