If your eating lean meats it's better to get a larger piece of your calorie source from protein. Protein takes more energy to digest than carbs, fats or alcohol. I think fat takes somwhere around 1-3 percent of its own caloric value to be digested, carbs 5-10, and protein somewhere around double that.
The numbers don't really matter, but protein runs you a little less risk of retaining the excess calories as fat as long as you don't pig out on them.
It's better to have extra protein in your system anyway so that your getting a sufficient amount during the day. The science on fat and carbohydrates are pretty much straight forward and well known in terms of the daily needs for a person. But protein isn't there yet. All in all its better to be safe than sorry.
