btw, avoid dairy products. they have casein which is too slow acting to be benficial in your post w.o. state. and don't rely on dairy for carbs for the same reason.

dairy products should be utilized for 2 nutrients...

casein protein
other source for calcium....

calcium has been found to aid fat metabolization
casein protein protein ingested before bed gives ur body slow digesting protein to use when it's rebuilding the muscle.

glass of skim milk before bed is what i do.

i.e. a 200 lb guy with 10% bf should take in 180 - 270g of protein...

200 lb total weight
180 lb is the lean mass (200- (200 * .1))

correct me if I'm wrong, but carbs are useless right after training. What you need is protein, your body is allready at "feed me" state after training, you don't have to give any more extra insuline spike shocks. Just protein.
Take the carbs few hours after that.

And even if bulking up the carbs won't do much after training... just give you more water weight.

then i will correct u... carbs are necessary right after training, because:
1. u need energy (polysaccharids wont give u energy before after an hour after uve taken it, so a little bit of simple carbs is allowed.)
2. U want something to act along with the whey (whey digests in the body after 2 hours.) so u need carbs to act with them and digests in about the same time...

this is the easy version...
