A friend of mine would like for me to train his 13 yr. old son. I have been working out for about 3 years and have been completley obsessed and addicted to working out. I have changed my lifestyle completly since then and most of all my physique (which was the reason why he wanted me to train his son). I would one day like to be a personal trainer and am at the time NOT certified. However this friend of mine persisted I help his son out and is willing to pay me. I have not came up with a workout routine for him so far as I am still reaserching. He has the same physique that I had when I started working out (A skinny fat kid lol) and from my experinces I believe I know how to give him best results. I am wondering if there is any DONT'S when it comes to training younger kids? I have been doing a lil bit of research and I think the best thing for him to start off would be a 3 day a week full body work out (basic excercises) (circuit style training) for 45 mins with 20 mins of cardio at the end and stretching b4 hand. I was also wondering what kind or repitions I should be looking at I was thinking of the 12-20 rep range as he has quite a bit of fat to lose and I believe it would be best to work on his form and get the excercises down rather than having him going heavy. Let me know what you think. (I will also give him diet guidelines as I belive diet is key more than anything) Any Advice?????

You got it right on diet is key. Not sure about the proper rep range for that age maybe 10-15. I think 3 days/week is a good idea. Make sure he is doing push ups, sit-ups, dips, pull-ups.

I didn't do pull ups when I was young and regretted it. Have him learn proper form and have fun as well.

I AGREE...

i have a PhysEd degree n ive never used it, nows my chance LOL.

he'd b ok to do all of that like HIGH REPS at light weights n with the right breathing exercises, but don't get him to hold his breath like wot many ppl do. keep the heavy weights away from him. it's all good with doing exercises that consists of his body weight
ie, chins
push ups etc:

keep to weightless deadlifts & squats
stick to a simple circuit till u think he's ready to move on to bigger & better things

BODYBUILDING BABY!!!!!!!!!......

he needs to be on 4 day split, 3-4 sets of 15 reps
push ups, sit ups, pull ups, dips, deadlifts, squata and barbell bench press.
his body will need time to adjust to the rigors of weight training and frequency will help with that, also give him the confidence of knowing whenever he feels he is ready he can add poundages more often to his core exersizes and other moves too.

A personal trainer can start at 20 dollars an hour. An Amateur bodybuilder with all his endorsment deals and worlwide appearences....oh wait, thats right they don't get that easilly.

Some people find it rewarding to teach others.

The bodies of 13 year olds are still growing and developing both muscularly and skeletally. Like most here, I would recommend keeping him away from the heavy weights in general so he can learn form. This will keep him from serious injury later.

Something I would recommend would be to ask the kid what he wants out of training. What he wants should determine the training focus.

One more thing... I wouldn't take cash for this (integrity issue for me). Accepting cash for something like this would, in my opinion, be passing yourself off as a pro trainer... regardless of what you might say.
