A friend of mine would like for me to train his 13 yr. old son. I have been working out for about 3 years and have been completley obsessed and addicted to working out. I have changed my lifestyle completly since then and most of all my physique (which was the reason why he wanted me to train his son). I would one day like to be a personal trainer and am at the time NOT certified. However this friend of mine persisted I help his son out and is willing to pay me. I have not came up with a workout routine for him so far as I am still reaserching. He has the same physique that I had when I started working out (A skinny fat kid lol) and from my experinces I believe I know how to give him best results. I am wondering if there is any DONT'S when it comes to training younger kids? I have been doing a lil bit of research and I think the best thing for him to start off would be a 3 day a week full body work out (basic excercises) (circuit style training) for 45 mins with 20 mins of cardio at the end and stretching b4 hand. I was also wondering what kind or repitions I should be looking at I was thinking of the 12-20 rep range as he has quite a bit of fat to lose and I believe it would be best to work on his form and get the excercises down rather than having him going heavy. Let me know what you think. (I will also give him diet guidelines as I belive diet is key more than anything) Any Advice?????

Well lets start here.

I posted up a article in the bodybuilding discussion area related to this. Don't train him too heavy. I would say nothing under 7 or 8 reps.

Don't have him do any forced reps, if he can only physically do 12 reps don't encourage the "extra rep".

Why are you going to add cardio training in on a weight lifting day? It kinda defeats the purpose, if he's going to do cardio, let him do it on seperate days.

After he gets his form down keep him in a 8-12/13 range and make sure that he doesn't rush through an excercise or use body leverage.

And be honest with him. Inform him. Hell, link him to this website. Tell him what a certain rep range does and why diet is important along with proper training.

Oh, and don't train him on any machines unless you need to. Legpress machine, hacksquats, ab machines, and pully machines. It's better if he develops his body early on for core excercises that he will need to use if he decides to continue training. Physically there is a large difference between training on a bench press machine and training with a regular bench bar.
