Jesus...does everyone fall for the bullshit carb phobia's?

I've cut people down to sub 6% with way more carbs than that. Stop worrying about your damn carbs and actually plan you diet based on what you actualy burn per day...

I'm no expert, but this is the world according to me:

The low carb/no carb debate is a tough thing. MY wife is constantly doing crap like the atkins/south beach diet.

The thing is though, initially low carb diets work wonders, because you are tricking your body. When I tried that diet initially (2002) I went from 255 lbs down to 218 lbs in the course of about 3 months. 37 Lbs in 90 days is fairly good, I think.

The thing is, right after I got off of the atkins diet, I blew back up to 258 (at my highest) and was fighting with my weight ever since.

And to be honest, I was constantly tired when I was at the low end of my weight on the atkins diet. I was lethargic, couldn't think straight... and was constantly hungry.

Last year, right around summer I decided to just start running a couple miles 3 times a week. After about 6 weeks, I incorporated weights while still eating a with a balanced diet. I know people will shame me here with what they can do, but my bench press from last year June has gone from 130 lbs (max-once) to 265 (4 reps) and I can run 2 miles in about 16 minutes (before it was about 25). I feel better and look forward to my workouts. I weigh 228 now. I only put on 3 lbs through the entire holiday season, so my body is working more like it should be.

If you are worried about calories, I'd increase my cardio activities to burn an extra 100 calories a day, or cut 100 calories total out of your diet per day, and see how that affects your weight. More cardio or less calories in a balanced diet is the way to go.

They work to a point but ask how many competitive bodybuilders start out their pre contest 20 week diet by dropping carbs.

Your experience is MUCH like people I have trained over the years as I take them from these low carb diets and put them on a structured balanced diet that actually takes resistance training into the equation. In a sport that relies heavily on glycogen the last thing you want to do is limit that for extended periods of time. Pre-contest 1-3 weeks before it plays a major part simply because you are going for pure aesthetics (dropping of subcutaneous water) and it does work short term very well but in terms of overall fat loss I can plan a diet that is extremely carb friendly and still achieve the same exact results over long periods of time.

I know a competitor down here in South Florida that has competed for 17 years in the natural circuits and has NEVER gone below 200g of carbs during his pre contest diets. The notion you need to first drop carbs to lose weight is just pure bs. In fact, when you do that too aggressively you often create a plateau later down the road that you simply won't break. Even the authors of the most extreme low carb diet (Lyle with UD2) only recommends it for 8 weeks.

The only time I ever go low carb is 3-4 hours prior to bedtime. If you time your nutrition right throughout the day your body will utilize your food better for fat burning. So keep your carbs high early on and decrease the amount ingested as the day progresses.

I front load my carbs. Since I workout early in the morning before work, I get most of my carbs during breakfast, post workout and lunch. From there on I cut back. Usually, the last two meals of the day are basically carb free.

As with everything else, this is not THE GOSPEL, it just works for me.
