Lean meats, oats, whole wheat/grain types of pastas and breads. Beans without the added sugars(pinto etc). Milk, eggs.

Keeping your glycemic load in the good range...i.e., not in the sour patch kids range.

You still need to make sure you're getting all your basics in by not forgetting your fruits and vegis too.

Almonds, natural peanut butter, and other healthy fats have a lot of calories also.

Yams. Great source of carbs.

Do you know if it's cool to eat them raw or not? I'm always looking for portable food, especially quality carbs. I often take my oatmeal with me and mix it with canned chicken and just dowse it in hot sauce to make it palatable, but it'd be nice to maybe keep a few yams or potatoes in the fridge and bring one or two to work to eat without having to cook them first. Obviously the skin and its dirt would have to be avoided, but the meat, I really don't know if it's edible raw. Might taste like hell, but I'm more concerned about safety, bacteria, etc.

When I've had to take my meals on the go with me, to prepare the yam I would peel it, wrap it in a moist paper towel, and microwave it for about 10 minutes. Then it's fully cooked and edible, you can just put it in the fridge or cooler and eat it whenever.

Cool deal, gracias. Now I need a Swiss Army Knife with a potato peeler too though. Can't have everything I guess.

You don't even really need to peel it, just poke some wholes in the skin before you microwave it and it works the same.
