Has this ever happened to any of you? If so, how long did it take before you were back at the gym doing a regular routine? The doctor told me to lay off all exercises that require bending and all exercises where heavy weight is involved.

yes, it did happen to me, only I am sure that mine was much worse than yours sounds. And second, it took me about 9 months to return to normal. I was 19 at the time.
First, I had two herniated disks in my lower back due to a football injury. The damage was quite severe and was creating a lot of radial pain down my right leg. I had a lot of bad advice given to me by some medical professionals which included a lot of stretching and heat. They didn't appreciate how serious my injuries were and both of their pieces of advice I was given ended up perpetuating the problems that I was having. The pain was often so severe that I couldn't function at all. I basically did not walk for about 5 of those 9 months.
Second, after I found a doctor who understood the issues fully, things started to get better. Since the disks in your back do not have their own blood supply, they tend to take quite a long time to heal. Since I had two herniations-- far worse than a mere bulge-- it took quite a while, but it usually only takes 6-8 weeks.
I would say avoid putting
any unnecessary weight on your spine. I would avoid lifting for the entire time that it takes to get it better. Don't mess around with your back.
Oh, and one other thing, it is almost certain that once you suffer a disk protrusion of some type, you will be prone to re-injuring your back for the rest of your life. This is going to make you the king of perfect form! It has for me.
