My thoughts are it is almost impossible to overtrain the muscular system in the long term. Now if you jump from a low volume to a high volume routine quickly you'll overtrain for the first few weeks while your body adapts... you'll lose strength feel constantly sore, etc. But after that you will start experiencing BIG time strength gains. Every single client i've tried this with has had the same results. People never do high volume though because 1) it's really hard and 2) after the first week when their strength drops & they feel like crap they quit because they think all the overtraining stories are true. If they just pushed themselves through the adaptation period they would be fine.

In almost every study looking at different factors & hypertrophy, volume is almost always the dominating factor

What kind of rep range with that many sets? And how long does that usually take?

3 weeks ago, I started 10 sets x 10 reps, 5 exercises 1 hour max. woooow!! Moderate weight, failure on the last 2 sets. Example: machine shoulder press, shrugs, side lateral/delts, 45lb plate press and bi's.

I tried high volume training for a while but I found I got better gains on a high intensity regimine, plus it takes less time. Maybe I just didn't stick with it long enough, like Layne was saying, to get through the adaptation point but after 3 months I still hadn't seen the results I got on high intensity so I switched back.
