I do three sets if any. I usually don't do it at all.

I think abs are important but sometimes i forget. But as far as sets i'd say go higher reps less sets and make sure you hit every part of your abs. I usually like to start with the weakest part of my abs but its up to you

You use your abs for every little movment. People don't train them directly because they are getting worked through out the whole day. I do a couple of high weight movements with them, but otherwise I rarely do them.

Ab training is what I call, "China's little secret" Why? Abdominals trained hard and often makes the muscle group dense and polished. Just like bike riding has put striations in my quads, abdominal work will tighten and densify the area. Your abs and lowerback control everything in your body, don't believe me? Try pulling either one of those muscle groups and try to stand, walk, sleep, fuckin anything and you'll see what i'm talking about. If a muscle controls so much, then why in the hell would you neglect it? Put it this way...in a cosmetical sense, if lifter A was doing ab work 3 times a week...I mean hard abdominal work, and Lifter B relies on in-direct work for abdominals, who's going to have the stronger core? The better looking abs? More details in the trunk? I hope you see where i'm coming from, and don't go off routines the pros are doing because that answer is obvious. If you just hate training abs then tough shit, don't make excuses.

I train primarily for strength so my ab work is always done heavy on a vertical plane. Seated cable crunches and hanging leg raises, 5 sets each twice weekly has worked for me so far.
