Yes there is proof, when you don't eat every 2-3 hours your body will see it as you don't have any food to take in so it goes into a state in which it hordes anything that goes into it. Along with this if you don't have a costant supply of protein your muscles can't continue protein synthesis. You don't have to have your social life killed to mantain this though.
Say you eat at 5:00pm, you don't have to eat until 7 or 8 at the longest. Say you want to eat at 8 again, make a protein shake, just a bottle of water and some protein mix and use it to supplement a meal, thats another couple of hours you get extended. Just bring your food with you.
