Salman Rushdie has had a few million on him for a lot of years now, and he's still hiding out.
Someone needs to point out that these clerics don't have the authority to decree a fatwa on anybody. All these guys are generally low level fringe guys, and most Muslims are pretty open-minded. The Arabic phrase for Jews and Christians actually translates to "people of the book", since they believe that Jesus simply wasn't the LAST prophet.

Everyday people seem to be killing each other in the name of one "peaceful' God or the other.

besides the fact that a mans life is in danger as a result of a cartoon, the worst thing about this is its coming from a cleric! isnt the cleric supposed to uphold islam to the best of his ability? is this in the quran somewhere? how do these guys with fucked up ideals get into a position like this?(make joke about catholic preists here)

He sure is. It's not in the Qu'ran, of course. The radicals are stealing the floor from moderates, the same way that guys like Pat Robertson can claim that Ariel Sharon had stroke because God didn't like him giving up part of the promised land or that his parishoners should pray for the death of a US supreme court judge.

The vast majority of Christians, Jews, and Muslims are peaceful, honest, hardworking etc, but the radical, violent ones get the news headlines.
