And aside from superficial differences like the noir crap the 'heavy metaphysical part' is fairly similar in The Matrix and Dark City. In both films the protagonist discovers that their reality is artificial.

The major bonus with Dark City is i don't have to see Keanu Reeves try and act.

Ok, now all of a sudden Im Ebert. The Matrix wasnt nearly as dark. I can barely remember Dark Shitty, but they would stop everything and place things in a manner how they wanted things to go. Dark Shitty also wasnt made into a triology, so you calling it better than the Matrix is a very unpopular opinion. Quite frankly I dont care enough to point out the differences. Matrix>Dark City

So every film that has sequels is immediately superior to films without? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is better than, say, Raging Bull?

I liked Dark City.

Watched Transporter 2 last night (therefore negating any opinion I ever have on a film). Was ridiculous beyond belief, especially the manner in which he removes the bomb from the underside of the car. But entertaining in a braindead way. Not as "good" as the first one though I didn't think.

Dark City is for geniuses only, so i think you will get a kick out of it lineski. I have always thought of it as The Matrix for people who actually like film and don't just jump on the blockbuster bandwagon.
