auto repair: do mechanics typically charge for an estimate?

I'd like to get my brakes checked/serviced. Do mechanics typically charge a fee just to estimate the necessary repairs? If so, what do you think they charge in your area TO COME UP WITH the estimate?

go in and ask before they touch ur car. they shouldn't charge you.

i am a mechanic and i would seggest that you do it yourself, get a Chilton manual for your year vehicle and check/fix them yourself, brakes are simple, any questions send me a pm. i can help!!!

Nice find Tech. Jiffy Lube "Promises to investigate and take appropriate action to prevent further occurences". That's pretty big of them. I know where I'm not taking my car again.
