Well first of all Barry Bonds is not the 2nd greatest baseball player of all time, I wouldnt even put him in the top 5. Sure he is a great hitter and has a level of talent much higher than most, the fact remains that he is chasing records set by normal men 50+ years ago. When you factor in the use of performance enhancing drugs, it makes it that much more laughable. Barry Bonds would have been in the Hall of Fame had he never touched a drug. He was a consistant basehitter and was stealing TONS of bases back in the early 90's. Regardless he chose to use steroids. Lets be honest here, he knew what he was doing, just because steroids werent yet banned does not mean it was ok to take them and if you think that way you have a serious lack of reasoning. They were still illegal to possess according to United States law.
One final note, I believe Barry Bonds is the victim of a witch hunt. He was being accused daily of using steroids before there was even proof. On the other hand, he really didnt do much to help himself. He was hostile to the media, unwilling to explain himself and was usually very private. I believe he has as much right to privacy as the rest of us, but in his case it would have greatly benefitted him to open up a bit more to say, "hey I have nothing to hide." As for the fan who threw the syringe, I say give him the Pete Rose treatment.
That being said heres my top 5 baseball players list, Barry is somewhere down the line:
1. Babe Ruth- easy pick for number one 714 home runs(no steroids), .342/.474/.690 lifetime
2.Hank Aaron- on top of being my favorite baseball player he had 3,771 hits, 755 homeruns and nearly 2,300 RBIs AND .305/.374/.555 lifetime
3.Ted Williams- 500 plus homeruns, 2,600 hits and a .344/.482/.634 lifetime
4.Lou Gehrig- another no brainer, about 500 homeruns (no steroids), .340/.447/.632 lifetime
5.Stan Musial- great baseball player with 3,600 hits nearly 500 homeruns and .331/.417/.559 lifetime
