Hello all!!

Lets just dive right into it. So, a little background...

I am active duty USCG. I am 25, 5' 11" at around 208lbs (disgusting). I made the choice about 6 weeks ago to become more healthy, and more importantly work toward the goal of becoming a competitive BBer. Fortunate for me that I amde this decision to get healthy b/c yesterday at my mandatory semi-annual weigh-in, I was overweight. In the eye's of the CG, due to my girlishly small wrists, my neck size and height in inches, my maximum allowable weight is 205(still disgusting). So I have six months, officially, to get below that weight.

Obviously since I made the choice six weeks agoto get healthy, it won't be a problem, but it is still really embarrassing and gross. Six weeks ago I was also a smoker(1.5 packs per day - Menthol...NOT newport!!!) and a bad eater. I can proudly say that today, 10APR08, I am 35 days smoke free, and have completely revamped my diet. I started two weeks ago with the gym and have been like man on a mission since.

I swam competitively for over 15 years and know my way around a gym. The big difference then was that we were training to elongate our muscles and to keep the fat down... Not to bulk up. Now the big change is that I am trying to bulk, while at the same time cut my current BF from 26% to about 12-14%.

I try and read most of the intelligent posts on here and have a lot of previous BASIC knowledge on lifting, nutrition, and etc.

My biggest fears are:

1. Not having/ Losing my current motivation
2. Not knowing how to properly attain my goals
3. Not reaching where I want to be due to work/life interuptions.
4. having the other three happen and then not be able to keep my wife(who is not so big on the BBing thing) motivated to stick with me support wise, through the entire process.

As far as my wife goes, I know that just like I will make everything habit, she will eventually jsut get used to it.

You all seem really positive and helpful, so continuing advice and support will always be welcome.

Get me started....

Welcome to the dungeon! Lots of bodybuilders your height weigh a HEALTHY 200+ pounds. Does the CG judge you based on BMI, or is there a significant reason you have to keep your body light?

I'm in a similar situation, i started weightlifting to lose weight and get stronger. It's very hard to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, but it's quite possible for someone just starting weight training.

I'm sure once your wife sees your physique change for the better, she'll be a little more enthusiastic about this bodybuilding thing. Give her time; while you're adjusting to the bodybuilder life, she'll be adjusting to life with a bodybuilder. Best of luck to both of you!

See you in the dungeon!

Hiya and welcome, you know as a competitor how long and hard this road is to follow. Well done on quitting smoking, make your goals small and attainable, trained hard, eat the right nutrition and rest, but also be a human being and enjoy life too. I have seen so many people over the years, come into the game over motivated and run out of steam, so heres wishing you a long and enduring time in this sport!

Good luck and you definitely will keep your motivation as long as you keep seeing results dude! Try not to make it to harsh on your wife if she's not into it. As long as it's not really affecting her negatively how mad could she be?
